Hi - I thought I'd share with you all that my 4 CD box-set from songs.com came to these faraway English shores!! Thanks for recommending the service everyone. It was quick! Joy indeed! All I'd had up to now was a copy of LOTGSG - which I'd come upon by total chance and which alone had totally won me over...now I have the luxury of experiencing all those years of Susan's work all in one go.....like one long private concert! But a live one would be better still .....one day?..in the meantime I'm happy to be experiencing all this wonderful stuff in my own living room! And when Susan does eventually play in the UK I'll know all the music like you do, so it will make it even better! Tonight when we go to friends for dinner I shall introduce them to Susan! I'm supposed to be working from home today, setting exams, but have to admit to being a little distracted! Have a great time at the weekend gig and afterwards, Kris and everyone,....I'll think of you! Give my best to Susan! SUSAN WERNER: 'Time Between Trains' By Mike Joyce Friday, November 6, 1998 The title cut on Susan Werner's new album explores those spiritually and emotionally restless interludes in everyone's life when nothing seems to be happening at all, so we're left to play the waiting game. But, hey, things could be worse -- a lot worse. In fact, after listening to Werner recite several reasons why some women find themselves pining for deserted islands, the uneventful life sounds utterly appealing. Here's just one sample, the opening verse to "Bring 'Round The Boat": "Judy turns fifty. Three days later her husband/ takes seven thousand dollars from their joint/account and buys a diamond ring for his much younger/mistress. A week later Judy discovers all of this and, quite upset,/ she calls him at work for an explanation and he says/ "Yes, but the check didn't bounce -- ." Always an impressive songwriter, Werner continues to compose sharp, funny, compassionate lyrics, a gift rare enough to set her apart from most of her folk-pop peers. Yet the performances on "Trains" also illustrate the power and beauty of her voice and her appreciation for the kind of jazz-inflected pop that Joni Mitchell helped pioneer a generation ago. And, like Mitchell, Werner wastes no time piquing the ear of the listener with emotionally charged vignettes that unfold like this one, from "Old Mistake": "It was another birthday party/ that Tina threw herself/ she said that you would be there/ so I came armed with someone else." Yes, given some of the unseemly alternatives, boredom can be pure bliss. © Copyright 1998 The Washington Post Company _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? So anyone still interested in making a last minute decision to come, the number for tickets is 603-863-2412. They're setting up the Opera House with cafe tables this year, so you can have a drink or two while you enjoy the show! So Mike? Are you going to Portland? And who else out there is going? I can't make Newport on Saturday but this NH believer hopes to go to Portland on Sunday. Just a 2 hour drive for me and I am sure it will be worth the trip. Heck, Newport is an hour+ away. See you all there maybe? Great show tonight at one of my favorite venues, Outpost in the Burbs! Susan felt it was a late start for a weeknight -- after 9:30 when she came on, I guess -- but she was her usual energetic self and I don't think anyone in the audience was tired once she started singing. Whenever I hear her I'm amazed again by her fantastic, strong and flexible voice -- I doubt there's anything she can't sing - -- and matching talent on both piano and guitar. Tonight she sounded *great*. She's also extraordinarily engaging, and her humor and caring both come through. I was surprised by the absence of a couple of songs -- including Like Bonsai -- from her latest, Time Between Trains, but she played lots of great material, new and old, including some unrecorded songs like Gotta' See the Body and Lucky Things. Some of the other songs we heard: Movie of My Life, Old Mistake, Bring 'Round The Boat, Sorry About Jesus, Standing in my Own Way, Last of the Good Straight Girls, Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter, Society Ball, The Great Out There, Ain't I Lonely Tonight. Nothing but good times. Hope you folks who are heading to the shows in Newport and beyond have a great time! Robin rbhoff@ix.netcom.com NJ, USA Pray for peace. Work for justice. Sing for joy.
