There were 4 songs that I had never heard before. I think the one you're referring to was called "Last Time Around"? That's just a guess. There was another one toward the front end of the second set that I'm again guessing was called "Cry, Cry, Cry". If these sound somewhat familiar to anyone, are these the correct titles? This becomes evident on Werner's understated new album Time Between Trains which captures the native Iowan's voice in songs of deep passions, difficult emotions, and subtle humor. Time Between Trains marks Werner's debut for The Bottom Line Record Company and is the follow-up to her acclaimed releases Last of the Good Straight Girls (Private Music 1995), Midwestern Saturday Night (1991) and Live at Tin Angel (1993). Media has championed Werner throughout her career. The Boston Globe refers to her as "a talent with unlimited potential" while Philadelphia Magazine echoes that she has "a voice like an angel and enough charisma to make Radio City Music Hall feel like an intimate night club." On Time between Trains, Werner infuses songs with elements of jazz ("Bring 'Round the Boat," "Montgomery Street"), folk influences ("Sorry About Jesus," "Courting the Muse") and melodic pop ("Petaluma Afternoons,'" "Like Bonsai," "I Can't Let You In"). What ever the approach, Werner's storytelling lyrics draw listeners into her world. In "Sorry about Jesus," she writes: "And by the way, I'm sure that you remember I was weird in school I'm sorry about Jesus and all that you know When I memorized the Bible I went overboard" Similarly, on "Old Mistake" Werner explores a recent fascination with embarrassment. "Old Mistake' is about being the victim of someone who's extremely good looking and I think we've all been there, " she laughs. Expressing that feeling musically, the song "pulls on you like seeing this person pulls on you. There's a bend in the song and a bend in the melody that's bittersweet, the music has the physical twinge written in." Werner's humor takes the spotlight on other songs, such as the swinging, jazz tinged "Boat Song" which dryly assesses relationships gone bad. "Women in conversations with one another have all said ' I can't take this anymore. Let's just go to Nantucket, all of us, and hurl the men off the island' Not that we should actually do that but we occasionally have such thoughts." The title cut also takes a very wry look at love. "'Time Between Trains ' is about waiting for the next event in your life." she says. "You're patient for a while, but then you get a little frustrated. I kept trying to make that song serious, but it was one that just refused to be." Indeed the title tracks lyrics take the edge off the subject: "And who'd have thought it all those years That I would find myself back here Feeling restless and ignored Staring at the schedule board Wondering why the fates above always route love though Miami" Closing out the CD, Werner's intimate reading of of a well known song, "Vincent," by Don McLean summarizes her musical strengths. "It seemed like a song we've all heard too many times before," she says. "But then I realized that the intent of the song was really good, and that it was worth honoring." Werner chose to slow the tempo down, resulting in a surprising, sensitive reading that uncovers new emotional territory in an old favorite. Raised on a farm in Iowa, Werner started learning guitar at age five, and went on to earn her Masters in Classical Music at Temple University in Philadelphia. " "I'm the youngest daughter in a long line of country people," says Werner, "but I went to the city and got all groovy." After graduation, while working a series of temp jobs, Susan picked up her guitar again, and quickly landed several club gigs, followed by national tours with Richard Thompson and Joan Armatrading. Susan continues to tour with various artists more than 200 dates a year. "Susan Werner is an extremely promising singer and songwriter from Iowa who writes about changing social patterns from a perspective that is clear eyed and leavened [with humor]." writes The New York Times. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= a+e=ig Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au [Sydney, Australia] "We're born to shimmer, we're born to shine, we're born to radiate. I think that song must be a couple of years old by now - it's never been recorded, as far as I'm aware. I was actually very disappointed that it didn't make it on to "Time Between Trains", as it's a gorgeous song.
