["Donald M. Ros] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 17 Oct 1998 00:59:19 -0400 From: "Donald M. Rosenfeld" Subject: Performance on 10/16 in Cleveland, OH at the Brick Alley. Listened to her Kent State appearance earlier this year, but didn't attend which I regreted at once. I was about to get tickets in Indiana or near Pittsburgh when I saw this Cleveland appearance on her Itinerary. My primary musical fetishes are folk and jazz. And while ackowledging the jazz in Susan's performances I still thought of her as primarily a folk singer until tonight. I don't (simply am unable to) give a cd playing the undivided attention I give to a live performer. What I heard tonight in a different light is the lyrics in Susan's songs. I no longer am sure she is primarily a folk singer. She is really a fusion artist....Folk-Jazz? Her presentation of songs is far more intense, to me, live and far more jazzy than on CD's. Her talent is break-through (break-out?) just waiting to happen. She closed with a country song on the piano (I can't stop loving you?)(pardon...50's altzheimers is striking at the moment) that was pure, and sweet jazz with a hint of folk pacing. Every other aspect of her performance was awesome. Her performance had a theme tonight - insecurities/failures (usually) in relationships. The power of her on stage reminds me a whole lot of seeing Judy Collins for the first time in '66 at a coffee house just off University Circle. Judy even had a base (stand-up) player backing her up. Susan Werner is a lot more of a performer now that Judy was then - and Judy Collins doesn't really need defending. WOW!
