Anyone care to define this for me? I just read John Lupton's review at the Music Boulevard site. He notes that SW is not perhaps so heartily welcomed into the "folk" genre as I had thought. I'll share this story. I saw Jennifer Kimball play in Arlington a few weeks ago. After her set I asked (unwittingly) if she had ever played on a bill with SW. I then got the nastiest, snobbiest look, followed by an arsenic-spitting "no." Is she in this rumored camp of SW detractors? Two things. I paid $7 to see JK, $8 to see SW in Austin. (1) There's a lot more than a dollar's worth of difference between someone with real talent and showmanship and someone who is (2) perhaps best described as the John Oates to Jonatha Brooke's Daryl Hall (in both cases the sum was better than the parts). TBT is not yet my favorite SW album. (it suffers from the fact that I bought Lyle Lovett's new 2CD the same day). But, it's got some real gems of lyrical phrasing which elegantly express any pain or emotional hunger that Woody or Bob or Joan have done in the past. And don't get me started on the "pedantic" review from Amazon.com! _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? On the folk_music list the topic has basically been declared off limits. One such discussion appeared on the Nanci Griffith list a couple of years ago...point your browser to http://www.rahul.net/frankf/Nanci/9604.html and start with 4/14/96, then peruse the archives for about a week. I think I even chimed in from Japan on that one.
