With Susan's other recorded & unrecorded songs that I've heard/experienced, there's usually some kind of connection with or appreciation of the character(s) or situation(s) portrayed. I know relationship situations as described exist, but the song gives me no reason to empathize with the wronged party. (another vein that has been nagging me is that prior songs address tragic events such as cancer, death, and assault from a survivor, empowering point of view. I'm not sure whether it is the lightweight delivery, but some songs on this album make me think 'victim perspective' instead.) wondering if I'm "way out there", or if anyone else has had reactions along these lines?? oh - as to Vincent, my memory is thinking Jane Olivor's version ... Announcing, for only $5 check or cash, your very own honorary "Susan Werner Music Critic and Next Record Producer" certificate, available only here through "Believers@smoe.org"... [Sorry about that, folks, but it had to be done -- Remember, the name of the list is "Believers," not "Critics"!!! ] If I may, an additional comment to the masses about TBT... The more I play it, the more I like it, discovering the little subtle touches of style within each song. If Susan has one fault, it might be that she's TOO varied in her musical talents (I'm still amazed)! With an album that showcases classic folk, blues, semi-rap, threepenny opera, etc., the listeners are few and far between that are going to love EVERY song on it. However, realize that what we've got here is a release that almost EVERY song is very listenable/singable/hummable/radioplayable/toughtofigureoutonmyguitarable... AND THAT'S BOTH RARE AND SPECIAL for a CD/album... How many have you bought, expecting greatness, only to be disappointed by most cuts? So, enjoy the new one, folks, and just skip over the one or two that ya don't like! As Sinbad once said, it's not like the old 8-track players, where you've GOTTA go all the way through it to get to your favorites! 'Nuff said, Paul (Come on, Jan 15!!!!) She had heard Susan (at Kerrville? I'm not sure) and had purchased "Last of the Good Straight Girls." She played it for me, and I suddenly had another favorite singer. Since that time we've had the pleasure of seeing Susan in one of her rare upstate NY performances, have filled out the collection with the other releases, and keep at least one Susan Werner CD in the rotation all the time. So when I told her that some folks on this list were less than ecstatic about TBT, she said, "huh?" I explained that some thought the voice quality wasn't strong enough, that the power that you hear in live performances wasn't there. "Yeah," she said, "but that growl that irritates me is gone, too." I really do like this CD. I've now gone through it a dozen times or more, and don't skip anything. It's easily my second favorite new release this year.
