Saw Sherilyn's note about samples on songs.com so I moseyed over to check it out (yawn). Hmmm...what's this 'Bring 'round The Boat' thing? "CLICK" on the ISDN ('thanks boss!') rate RA sample. oh....my...god I thought my heart would stop. I'd given up hope of hearing another song like "Man Who Used To Love Me"; one that turned Susan loose in front of a complex jazz backdrop and let her really show her talents as a jazz singer. No more worries! I'm a happy boy. 'Boat' has the same stunningly beautiful interplay of Susan's voice with the melody, but this time it is more restrained and distant; I can only compare it the "polished marble" feel of something by Kenia or perhaps Donald Fagen (there's a similie!) - smooth, beautiful, cool and tinged with irony. To use a technical term: "Wowee!" Susan - thank you! Bob PS Time for a SusanExpedition(tm)! See you all at Border's on the 15th. Have I posted here yet? If not, hi! I've been lurking around here for a while, actually. Haven't had much to say until now. I know a lot of you folks already it seems... woj commented: >well, she more than capably followed susan mckeown two years ago at falcon >ridge, so the nields should have been a pushover. ;) ;) ;) If anyone can keep the Nields-y energy going, it's Susan. The first time I (and woj, though I don't think he remembers it) ever saw Susan Werner play live was on July 1, 1995 in Fort Erie, Ontario at the Canada Day Friendship Festival. We were there mainly to see 10,000 Maniacs, Wild Strawberries, Barenaked Ladies and Billy Bragg, but a few sets into the day-long nonstop festival a lone woman with an acoustic guitar took the stage (I think she came on after Wild Strawberries, actually). The crowd, which by that time was several thousand strong had up until that point been pretty lethargic, but by the end of Susan's set she had the entire crowd cheering. I'd heard "Last Of the Good Straight Girls" on WFUV quite a bit before then, but I didn't consider myself even a passing fan until that moment. I was so impressed by how she managed to wake everybody up in a day filled with full-band performances. Of course, since then I've seen her play live in much smaller venues quite a bit, and I think she's definitely one of the best performers on the planet today, not to mention one of the most side-splittingly funny human beings I've ever seen. I'm going to keep my mouth shut about the new album until everyone's had a chance to hear it ... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Sep 1998 23:48:50 -0400 From: sduncan@malico.com (Susan Duncan) Subject: I'm jealous I have never had the pleasure to hear Susan live so hopefully one of these days she'll make it up to Ottawa. I picked up "Last of the Good Straight Girls" off of BMG based on their description and a decision to take a chance on someone I'd never even heard of. Needless to say I was hooked and found my way on this list when out of desperation for a new CD, started combing the internet for something anything about her. I'll be definately picking up her latest CD. I'd like to ask some of you "oldtimers" how her older CD's compare to the more recent ones. I'm tempted to go with the package special, but I'm not sure... - -- Making the Web Work for You (tm) Susan Duncan (sduncan@malico.com) Voice: (613) 744-3283 Director, Internet Development Fax: (613) 744-1825 http://www.malico.com Toll Free: (877) WEB-PROS http://www.OttawaWEB.COM MALICO - Graphic Design and Internet Development Founders: Ottawa-Hull Chapter-Int'l Webmasters Association HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V2 #132 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
