I'm just back from the Shawnee Peak Folk Festival, and what a great show it was! The weather was gorgeous, and it looked like they had a good turnout. The lineup was Delco Ray, Susan, Chris Smither, Bill Staines, Rory Block, Liv Taylor and Patty Larkin. Susan was just amazing, as always, and seemed really up for this show. I swear I've never seen anyone with so much energy. I won't go through the whole setlist, but in my opinion the highlights were "Much At All" and "Society Ball". The crowd gave her a standing ovation, and I was pleased to see that she has so many fans, even up in Maine! She made herself available the rest of the day for autographs, or just some conversation. Rory came on later in the day, and was just great. She covered material from her whole career, from "Terraplane Blues" to "Silver Wings". My only disappointment was that she didn't stick around after the show to chat and sign autographs. Liv did his thing, yucking it up and telling some very funny stories. I've seen Liv 3 times now, and although I really like him, he seems to play the same material each time. The crowd loved him though, and he patiently signed tons of autographs after the show. Patty Larkin finished things up. I felt a little bad for her, as after Liv was done, a lot of people left the show. She had great rapport with the crowd, and played a few good songs, but all in all I wasn't overly impressed. Some of her music was very dark. During her set I went down and talked with Susan & Jane. I told Susan that Patty was good, but not in her league. You should have seen the sparks dart out of her eyes! She's sooooooo modest. "You don't understand!", she said. She told me what great records Patty made, and what great lyrics she writes. Maybe so, but I still don't think her lyrics touch you like Susan's, and definitely doesn't have anywhere near Susan's range. Bye the way, this is the first time I've actually had a conversation with Susan and Jane, and I have to say that they're two of the most approachable, kindest people I've ever met. They immediately made me feel like I was an old friend or something. As far as I could tell they were the only ones to stick around through the whole show. They watched every performer, went up and hung with the crowd, patting dogs, chatting with the sound crew... it was so nice to see a "star" come down to everyone else's level for a change. I really have a lot of admiration for that. And the thing was that it obviously wasn't just for show. They were genuinely having a good time. So all in all, a great day, and a great concert. I hope to see this show happen again next year, and I really hope Susan is on the bill... maybe headlining next year?! Oh, and if you're lurking Jane (and I know you are!), tell Susan I said she's full of shit... can you see Patty Larkin trying to belt out something like "Great Out There", then soften to "St. Mary's of Regret" (thanks for the explanation Jane), and also have the versatility to sing something like "La Vie En Rose"?? I think not!! I love Patty Larkin and I love Susan Werner . I can't say that one's better then the other. Or that Cheryl Wheeler or Ferron is better. They all do what they do and they're all wonderful in their own way. Why put someone down to build someone else up? susan (who saw Gillian Welch last night - she and David Rawlings sounded like angels, despite Gil's flu - where they better then Patty's show last week in San Rafael? Better's not the word. Each experience was different - - and pleasurable) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 00:27:02 -0400 From: mellon farmer Subject: Re: Shawnee Peak review also sprach Kris Richardson: >can you see Patty Larkin trying to belt out something >like "Great Out There", then soften to "St. Mary's of Regret" (thanks for >the explanation Jane), and also have the versatility to sing something >like "La Vie En Rose"?? I think not!! ah, but patty larkin's voice is not, for me anyways, what makes her as great and special as she is. she's an excellent songwriter, a striking guitarist and, when she's on a roll, one of the funniest people in the world. i don't think it's fair to compare and contrast like this, but it's less fair to limit the comparison to only one or two dimensions. it's okay with me if you don't like patty larkin, but i think statements like the above miss the point. woj HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V2 #118 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
