Moshkovitz" Subject: Susan in Newport Hey, all! Okay, let's see if I can do last night justice here. It was a night of acoustic guitar wizardry as Tom Rush was the official host of the tribute to Club 47 (now called Passim) in Harvard Square along with Susan, Vance Gilbert, Janis Ian, and Brooks Williams. It was Susan's first time at the Newport Folk Festival, and if I read the crowd right (I have a hard time being objective these days), it will most definitely NOT be her last. What I found most interesting was that she was the fourth performer to play (right before Tom). I don't know if they drew straws or what, but the fact that Janis Ian played before she did, to me, is amazing! Anyway, everyone got about a half hour to do his or her own set (except for Brooks Williams, who only got to do two songs). In addition to her own set, Susan also helped out on Vance's "Taking It All To Tennessee" (about his friendship with Ellis Paul). During the intermission, which was after Vance and Janis, I overheard someone talking about how great the guitar-work was on that tune - I told him he hadn't seen anything yet. Brooks pretty much opened the second set, and after his two tunes, Susan came out and he joined her on "Last Of The Good Straight Girls" (the slow version, which she seems to be doing a lot lately). The rest of her set included: - - "Like Bonsai": Introd by saying that, despite how Iowans are portrayed in _Saving Private Ryan_, they are not all completely nice. In fact, they do have shoplifters in Iowa. - - "Year Of The Bad President": She acknowledged the fact that it was risky to do a new song at the Newport Folk Festival, but she went ahead and did it anyway. - - "Your Old Mistake": Introd by talking about how it was a song about being a "victim of beauty", and about feelings of inadequacies, which always seem to have a way of hanging around. - - "Born A Little Late": Yes, it was a dream come true to play the Newport Folk Festival, but quite frankly getting there was a pain in the ass, thanks to some people, and then right into the song. Brilliant reaction from the crowd. "Those were the days. Well, they still are the days! 'cause what do they have for you now? The new Volkswagon bug! And now it has windows that go up AND down! And it has... HEAT!..." (Obviously, I do her no justice whatsoever, but hopefully you get the idea) At the end of the song, someone started waving his cane in the air, too, which was quite amusing. The crowd's reaction to her and to her set was impressive. I don't know how many of them were familiar with her before, but if I'm allowed to make predictions here, I'm going to say that the next two years are going to be big for her. I think her time is now. Sadly, I will be unable to see her show on Martha's Vineyard (ooh, bad memories there) or the house concert in Sudbury, but I will be at the show with Joan Baez (well, I won't be at the show with Joan, I'll be at the show Susan is doing with Joan) at the Cape Cod Melody Tent on Tuesday, so, again, if you see a tall, bald guy with glasses and a goatee, come on over and say "Hi". Rock on!
