She and Jay Scott performed: Tappan Zee Bad At Love Old Mistake Last of the Good Straight Girls (very unusual new arrangement) Can't Let You In Got to See the Body (New song and VERY funny) Sorry About Jesus and All That Woman Unto You (VERY new - I think this was her first test flight) Pleasure to Be Here [Terrific number by Jay Scott from his album Miranda's Waltz] Bonsai Miss YOu Much At All Teach Me Tonight (yes, THAT Teach Me Tonight) Movie of My Life Standing In My Own Way The Five Minute Affair (New) Born A Little Late Susan announced that she was leaving for Nashville today to start recording the new album. It's scheduled to be released in August. The new arrangement of LOTGSG was interesting - almost a capello - but I still like the original version. I was surprised she didn't perform "Petaluma Afternoons", since I expect it to be on the new album. (Nice enough song, but I'm sorta luke-warm about it and so didn't miss it.) I was fully committed to "Can't Let You In" as my favorite new song (the plaintiveness reminds me a little of Michelle Shocked's "Fever Breaks" - CLYI has the same utterly captivating juxtaposition of starkness and space.) But, "Woman Unto You" could ace it out. I'm totally ignorant about music, so I can't really properly describe details of Susan's solo guitar work on this one, but there were several complex and beautifully executed transistions to (I think - help, help Mr. Sweeney!) different keys that were both moving and technically striking. When she finished she didn't seemed totally happy with the results and commented that it needed a band. Let me tell you, it sounded great from the centerfield seats, as it. I hope she keeps the solo version alive if she writes another. "Got to See The Body" is a very funny "I've been dumped" song, but the signature riff in it sounds like an echo of that in "Can't Let You In". I think if it were spaced further from that song, I wouldn't have noticed it, but it's there. The show wasn't a sell-out :-( but it looked like about an 85% crowd. The Barns is an "intimate" indoor venue at the large outdoor Wolftrap pavillion, but the turn-out wasn't bad for this Susan Impoverished area. The acoustics of the place are superb and that somewhat compensated for the "big show" gestalt, which made a chance encounter and a few words with Susan, Jay or Jane pretty unlikely. (I expect Susan will take off like a rocket one day soon, so I better get used to it, though. The days Joe Sixpack Fan holding a mike cable while Jane tapes down it will be long gone :-) ) Well, wish you all could have been there. I couldn't get a good estimate of the ratio of Susan-addicts (Believers and the unwired genus) to folks that were just there because they had a Barns subscription, but everyone was bowled over, as usual. (I dragged in a small herd of newbies myself and did get to enjoy the post show "Wow! She is GREAT!" gushes.) Cheers, Bob PS Most disconcerting moment: Arriving home 25 minutes after leaving a Susan show. My girlfriend and I sort of looked at each other like "Shouldn't we be driving for another four hours?" - -************************************************************************************* - -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list - -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers"in the body of the message. - -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org - -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com - -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com - -************************************************************************************* ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V2 #63 ****************************** -************************************************************************************* -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the -message. -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com -*************************************************************************************
