Spencer" Subject: RE: just chatting I actually like the LOTGSG version of the song better. It was my introduction to Susan. I dropped into the coolest record store in Berkeley, called "Hear Music". It's a very small store. They were a Bay Area originator of the "listening bar" concept. They had headsets setup around the store with featured selections that rotated on a regular basis. If you wanted to listen to anything, you could take it up to the front and they'd open it up and let you listen as long as you wanted. The store was entirely staffed by musicians, who would pick music based on a given theme. Sometimes they'd get other well known musicians to suggest THEIR favorite influences, so that if you were a fan of a musician you could plug into the things they listened to. (What, BTW, are Susan's favorite musical selections? I know she mentioned Chet Baker on a web site I saw one time. Any others that you all know of?) Anyway, one of the featured selections one day was LOTGSG. I can't remember the theme, but the blurb said something like "Listening to "I Still Believe" gives you hope that things are going to turn out alright". I put on the headphones, pressed "Play", and loved what I heard. Spirited tempo, good guitar, great voice. This sounded like a keeper. Next song sounded good too. I skipped through the whole disk catching the first 30 seconds of each song and realized I had probably just discovered my favorite artist! When I got Tin Angel, I found the version of LOTGSG to be a little too pretty. I like the spirit and tempo of the later version. The ending of the song on Tin Angel especially didn't work that well for me. I like it, but I like the version on the studio album better. Moshkovitz" Subject: i need your help! Right, the other day, the sweetest woman came into my store looking for a song she heard on 91.9fm WUMB in Boston. She thinks the song (or maybe the album) is called "Indian Summer", and it's about how she doesn't want to leave New England. It didn't sound familiar, but I said I'd try to find out who it was. If anyone has any idea, could you please e-mail me privately. I'd greatly appreciate it! Also, now that I think about it, she also wanted any song about New England, Boston, or Cape Cod (however, my store, corporate that it is, doesn't really get anything that isn't distributed by a major label, but I'll take any suggestions you may have). I did sell her the Kingston Trio's "M.T.A." as well as Dar's "Flinty Kind Of Woman". Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give. Rock on! I think what this tells us is, we all tend to prefer the arrangement we heard first, a natural phenomenon...:) My introduction to Susan was "Rubber Glove Blues", which now pretty much makes her roll her eyes because it was apparently a hit on the college circuit. I heard it on public radio (WHYY) during an interview and, while it isn't my favorite song, it has a sentimental attachment for me... Not that any of that matters. I'm curious which songs were others' introductions to Susan (there's a sentence in there somewhere, I promise)...
