I just KNOW that I'm asking for trouble here, but I just picked up a copy of "Live at the Tin Angel," which has not been all that easy for me to find, and I'm wondering, before I rev up the ol' CD player, what you folks out there in Susan Land think of it. Feel free to deluge the list (not me!) with your reviews, high points, low points (yeah, I know, like you've got enough objectivity to find ANY low points), the whole sheebang. Wow, this is a really big request. After thinking about it for about 5 minutes, it can tell you that (in my opinion) this was the best of the CD offerings so far. There are only a few comments in the negative end, and I'm likely not to follow the rest of the crowd on most of them. First of all, I though that the sound quality lacked a little bit. It's not a problem if you're sitting near your stereo or if you have a remote control and can make volume adjustments as needed. It seems to capture a little of that moodiness that really holds your attention when you see her live, but it doesn't work as well on a recording. The acoustics of the Tin Angel are a little "tinny" for me sometimes, and the acoustic guitar can sometimes take on a twang that starts to hurt if the sound person isn't careful. You pick up a little of that in the recording. I usually really like the feeling of a live album, and while I don't dislike it for this recording, I think that it loses a lot in the translation from live to recorded live. One of the things I love most about Susan Werner is her ability to capture the soul of the audience. She seems to know how to read a crowd, and once she's adjusted to the audience's nuances, she seems to cater to them. This album is really enjoyable to listen to, but the more you listen to it, the harder it is to carry over that emotion you feel the first time you hear it. I've learned over time that I can play it once in a while now and I still have the same feelings about it that I did when I realized that I was in the crowd for the shows that were recorded. I don't know about other people, but the ambiance of crowd noise is good at the beginning or end of things that have been recorded live. The fades are very abrupt here. There are several places where the fades couldn't come in because Susan seems really quick to transition out of telling you about a song into actually singing it when she performs. (That's changed in the shows I've seen lately) The added introductions are great, but I have to admit that I really wished that "Some Other Town" had been included instead of the intros. All in all, I love this album and I cherish both signed copies that I have. I have a lot of fond memories of the Tin Angel, like taking a fellow list member to a show the same night we picked him up at the airport for a visit. Now, I live on the west coast and listening to this album brings back a lot of the things that I miss about the east. When I by a CD for a friend or when I introduce others to Susan Werner for the first time, this is usually the CD I reach for. That's my nickel's worth. Hope it doesn't make you think twice about your purchase. I guarantee you won't be disappointed enough to let anyone pry it out of your fingers. :^) - --Marty - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i | e-mail: myoung@ikonic.com k | Marty Young voice mail: (415) 908-8131 o | Systems Engineer cellular: (415) 990-5471 n | fax mail: (415) 908-8100 i |------------------------------------------------------------ c | Hey, check out the VU! http://www.ikonic.com/ - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - -************************************************************************************* - -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list - -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers"in the body of the message. - -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org - -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com - -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com - -************************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 20:45:25 -0500 (EST) From: Leslie Dreyer Kalra Subject: Re: Live at the Tin Angel > Hello listers. Thank you very much. > I agree with most of what Marty Young said so well. Live at Tin Angel is my favorite of the albums, mainly because it's the only one that comes close to catching the Susan Werner "experience". Her songs are wonderful, of course, but I don't think you can truly appreciate them until you've heard some of the "patter" (a bad word, but I can't think of a better one) between them. I don't get to concerts much any more due to the joys of parenthood, but whenever I need a dose, I turn to my "Live" CD. The songs that I've heard in concert tend to mean more to me than songs I've heard only on CD, partly because she often tells at least part of the story behind each one. That makes it more real and more immediate to me. This CD recaptures that atmosphere. I also treasure it because it has "My Mother's Garden" and the original arrangement of "Last of the Good Straight Girls". There were some problems with that arrangement in the bridge and at the end, but I like the general feel of it better. There are a couple of other songs that had problems, too, but I tend to enjoy it more because it's not a polished studio album. It feels more intimate to me somehow. When this CD went out of print, I wouldn't let my sole remaining (signed) copy out of the house (I had another one that ended up on permanent loan to a friend). I was so relieved to see it come out again. I once bought so many of them (as gifts for friends) that the people at the desk thought I was reselling them someplace...:) But in the end, you just have to immerse yourself in it for a while and see how you like it. Our opinions can't really matter...:) Enjoy it -- I envy you your first listen...
