I was particularly happy to see Jay Scott playing back-up for her, and even happier to find his CD for sale in the lobby! (I played it on the drive home last night and it is well worth the $15 - Mason Williams/Micheal Hedges-ish is my poor attempt at categorization.) Jay played one solo tune ("Whitewater") to a hushed house. Pity Susan didn't do "Man Who Used to Love Me" - Jay can really scorch the guitar solo on that one, but she may need a bigger cast of characters to do that song justice. One of the new songs Susan did clearly demonstrated her increasing mastery of the whiz-bang Parker Fly - I confess I still prefer to hear her at the piano, where I think she makes a better emotional connection, but she is rapidly making that a difficult choice. Her performance of "Much At All" was heart rending - the audience seemed hesitant to applaud after it, fearing to break the mood. She also did a bang-up job on a 40's standard, also at the piano. What a voice! I noticed the slight lyric change to "So Heavy" that was mentioned by a West Coast Believer last week. I've heard her tinker around with lyrics on new songs from show to show, but it's interesting she changed the lyrics to an older tune. Wonder if there's a story behind that? After an explosive rendition of "Pleasure to Be Here", and two encore numbers, the show was over (too soon!). I had plotted a rapid escape via the back door but that led me right past Jay, so I had to stop and compliment his performance. He said that his CD ("Miranda's Waltz") is now available through a couple of Internet dealers, so it should be easier to obtain. (It's worth looking for!) As my girlfriend and I were then barrelling for our delayed exit, we nearly stepped on Susan, sitting on the floor, recharging for whatever she has to face after a show. I chatted with (more accurately: "gushed at") her for a moment. The Message I bring to you from that happy encounter is that she is hoping for a good turn-out for her April 24 show at the Barns of Wolftrap in Virginia. If you haven't seen a show at that venue, you're missing a treat. It has a superb sound system and excellent seating through-out. Buy tickets! Bring your friends! Tickets are availble from ProTix or directly from Wolftrap (www.wolf-trap.org). Anyone know where the review Paul mentioned will appear? If you see it, please summarize to the list! See you at the Feb 28 show at Tin Angel. (We have to get secret "Believers" lapel pins or something to recognize each other at shows....) Let's see, up to Philly for that show (or both of them) Saturday, then Michelle Shocked at the 9:30 Club Sunday night. Don't call me at work the following Monday - I think I'll be a little late...
