The "Sorry about Jesus & all that" is like one of the friends apologizing to the other for trying to push her religion onto her friend, because she's moved on from that. Hope that helps! - -Erin (who was incredibly thrilled to see Susan for the first time and so disappointed that there was another show after her so she didn't have time to play all of the songs that she played at the other shows (including St. Mary's :-( )) "Oh life is sweet but it sure is short so you better enjoy the ride." -Jonathan Kingham Erin O'Connell Western Washington University n9246677@cc.wwu.edu - -************************************************************************************* - -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list - -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers"in the body of the message. - -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org - -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com - -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com - -************************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 23:07:47 -0800 From: myoung@ikonic.com (Young, Marty) Subject: a long commentary on two CA shows... I'm a relatively new addition to the California populous, so this is something that I felt a need to think about before writing. I was first awed by Susan Werner when she opened for someone at the Birchmere back in 1993. I don't even recall staying for the rest of the show... From that moment on, I made a decision to go to any of the shows within a 3 hour driving radius. Since I only moved here a year ago, that's a lot of shows up and down the eastern seaboard. I saw her numerous times at the Tin Angel and the Birchmere, in fact, my partner and I dragged another list member to a show at the Tin Angel the same day he flew in from California to DC for a visit. (Thanks again Zorn!) So, after a brief hiatus and recovery from the flu, I decided to take a few minutes to review the Santa Barbara and Monterey shows. I had planned to be at the Berkeley show as well, but the after a brief arguement with the flu, I decided it was best to stay home rather than risk infecting the entire attending audience... The show in Santa Barbara was truly wonderful. In spite of overbooking and having to sit through what seemed to be the worst poet-turned-songwriter in the history of the universe (She SUCKED out loud!), Susan put on a brilliant show. Most of the crowd was there for the originally booked Eddie From Ohio. Most of them were converts by the end of Susan's hour and a half set. She performed mostly new songs, including Petaluma Afternoons, Bonsai, and Pleasure to Be Here (all three of which are the strongest written songs I've heard of hers). She also treated the audience to a tremendous rendition of Society Ball which had people laughing on the floor before it was over. The few people who were there specifically to see Susan were also in for a treat as Eddie From Ohio is fantastic as well. I was amazed at the number of Santa Barbarians (self-proclaimed) who were unaware of the Susan's first two albums. I was treated to a solo performance following the show (it was my birthday) of John the Waiter (my absolute favorite). If you have a chance to hear this song, listen closely to the lyrics; they will blow you away. The Monterey show was by far the greatest. Morgan's is a very small venue and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. This seemed to be the only show here in California where she played completely on her own. She opened with a strong set of the same songs mentioned above. There was more talking during this show, which is always a treat as Susan seems to have the wit of Robin Williams. Audience members were treated to a very intimate show and the music takes on a new dimension in this setting. not only were you able to really hear the intricacies of the music, but you could really feel the message in each song. This venue will be hosting Odetta in March. I would recommed trying to get to this show if possible. We were treated to two sets and Susan seemed ready to go on, but alas, she was driving to San Jose to catch a plane to Carson City the same night. In spite of my inability to recreate the night for you, the show was definitely one of the best I've seen outside of the Tin Angel. I would like to take a moment to share a personal note. When I moved out here a year ago from the DC area, I left behind all of the things about the East Coast that I loved... the warm beaches, the seasons and so much more... I've recently settled down in Petaluma, CA and hearing Susan's song Petaluma Afternoons at McCabe's in LA for the first time, among several friends who know me from the East Coast, was truly special. She captured all of the things about Petaluma that I fell in love with when I moved here. The more I've heard this song, the more I appreciate Susan's ability to capture anything in verse. The next time you listen to this song, let it paint a picture in your mind. I promise you that the picture you get will be exactly what Petaluma is like and if you ever find yourself on the West Coast and you want the Petaluma tour, drop me a line. - --Marty - -************************************************************************************* - -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list - -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers"in the body of the message. - -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org - -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com - -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com - -************************************************************************************* ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V2 #11 ****************************** -************************************************************************************* -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the -message. -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com -*************************************************************************************
