Having never seen or heard her before, I can't say what song it was, but she asked if it was a cha-cha beat, and people answered yes. She asked, "Can anybody show me that?" Laughter. "No, you apparently haven't been to a Susan Werner concert before. I really would like to see that!" So the house lights went up and a middle aged couple cha-cha-ed in the aisle while Susan played guitar. It was really wonderful. They were very good and it gave the whole audience a sense of involvement and inclusion in the event. There was a lot of audience participation when asked for. SW asked about "The Movie of My Life," and a friend of mine said it sounded like it was influenced by Kurt Wiel. Moment of self-recognition from SW. At the end of the show she commented that we weren't as scary as she expected an L.A. audience to be, that we behaved ourselves very well. Ha! My husband and I hung around a little while and spoke with both Susan and the wonderful Dana Cooper, who opened for her. My husband said her work reminded him of Jacque Brel and she was excited about that, really loves his work. She asked how we'd heard of her, and we told her we'd seen her on PP&M's Lifelines on PBS. She said the most fun about that was Tom Paxton and Richie Havens telling dirty jokes backstage! Anyone out there who gets to see her open for Richie Havens in that upcoming concert is in for an amazing evening! The Tractor Tavern is a small place - it was easy for Susan to banter back and forth with the audience between songs. She has a very understated, self-deprecating, minimalist style that reminds me of Lyle Lovett on stage. It's clear she has a real quick wit. After the show, I asked for the set-list from Jane when she was packing up the stage. Unfortunately, Susan's handwriting is a bit tough for me to interpret. Add that to the fact that I don't know the "official" titles to all the new songs, and it adds up to a close guess on what was played. * Standing in My Own Way * Last of the Good Straight Girls * Old Mistake * Tappan Zee - this was a great performance - the guitar was really percussive. On the album, this song is swingy, but this performance was fierce - really hot. She did an extended rap at the end about "how do you tell someone you're planning to marry that you've met someone else?". In the intro, she talked about what a significant thing engagement is to a woman - you have this "thing" on your finger and it's time to contemplate "Pfaltzgraf" (china). It set up the song perfectly. * Bonsai * Bad at Love * Love Her Alone * Sorry about Jesus and All That (Weird at School?) * Already (Au Naturele) * Much at All (on piano) * Movie About My Life (on piano - this is a funny song) * Pleasure to Be Here (this is a really great one, sort of like "Still Believe", in that it tells the stories of 3 people who have had brushes with death, and how much they appreciate life. Still Believe tells the stories of 3 people who have had tough relationships and illness, and who might have given up, but who still believe) * Encore - When Will I Be Loved Her written set list also had "Society" on it, but she had to get off the stage because there was another show coming in later that evening. She made it clear with a subtle hand gesture what she thought of being pushed off early, as everyone was really getting into the performance. Susan was in terrific voice. She has a great upper range that she doesn't use much, but she should use it more - it's really strong and beautiful. After the show, she signed our Tin Angel CD. She was pleased to hear that the mail list was helping to publicize the show. She said she would probably be coming back to Seattle in the Fall. I can't wait. A bad disc in my neck has made normal life, not to mention playing a guitar, an adventure in pain, so out it comes. I go in tomorrow, and probably be home on Wednesday, so don't bounce any messages and please be patient- it may take a while to get a reply from me. However, if you put "Urgent" (or believer!) in the Subject, I will get to you first. Consistent with my plan for recuperation, would anyone local be willing to give me a ride to Greg Simon's show on the 30th in Malvern? Greg is a bud, and a great writer and music is therapeutic, at least for me. And it solves the problem of finding other believers. Just go to the guy with the Philly collar (neck brace). Same goes for the 31st in Media-I already arranged a ride to this one. Susan is opening for Richie Havens-how cool is that :-). Hope to see some of you at the shows, and if you would be willing to offer a ride to this cripple, please mail me privately.
