My brother Rolf and I sat with Susan Krauss in the front row, house-left (is that stage-right?) near the piano bench. Ms. Werner did a mix of old and new: (The question marks indicate places where I am guessing the title.) ? Standing in my own way ? Tappan Zee Your old mistake [on the new Parker Fly] Bad at love Last of the good straight girls St Mary's of regret ? Petaluma afternoons ? --A cycle of 3 songs, sung seated: An erotic mezzo-soprano | with a Gibson(?) guitar | ? (Love) Her alone ? | ? I was weird in school ? | ? Au naturelle ? (about the issue of aging) ---- ? Bonsai ? (some trees are meant to reach up....) Much at all Loves that you keep to yourself? ? When they make the movie of my life (...write the book about my life) ? The society ball Pleasure to be here encores So heavy (change in lyrics -- brother Benny didn't buy a silver plated flute, but took up painting and gave the partership the boot) When will I be loved She was doing a lot of scatting between songs, & played at least three different guitars including the spiffy new red Parker Fly. She said she had signed a new contract and that a record was to get underway in (I believe) March. She had a lot of choreography :-) leg posturing and stuff I had not seen her doing in her previous appearances in these parts. She told us she was very happy to be here, and did we really perceive how wonderful this area (central California around S.F.) IS? Said she did not see why any of us would ever need Prozac.... She did comment that we were too quiet. someone said it was a sign of respect. She poo-pooed that. I suggested "awe". That's when she made the remark that Andrew Levy alluded to: Despite her protests that there are more important people to be in awe of, I was awestruck by the performance. It was a high-energy, good-vibes, hot licks performance. In "So heavy," she started on one of the wooden guitars, broke one string, carried it forward just fine anyway, then scat/segued over to the "pianny" and delivered "When will I be loved" as sort of a bluesy ballad as a finale. Perhaps Susan Krauss or Tal Hurley or Andrew Levy (who ELSE was among the 100-plus?) would care to correct or amplify on some of the above.... It was great, and was (of course) too short! :-) --Guy Haas Software Exegete - -************************************************************************************* - -This has been a posting from the Susan Werner "believers" list - -To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers"in the body of the message. - -To post to the list send mail to believers@smoe.org - -To reach a human, send to charlies@voicenet.com - -Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com - -************************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 98 11:25:40 -0500 From: Rosemary.Connors@wharton.upenn.edu Subject: Greg Simon performance See the message below from Greg Simon, composer of the classic "The Great Out There", for information about his January 30th performance in suburban Philadelphia. Greg is a great live performer - smart, sweet and funny, just like his songs. It should be a wonderful evening - - get there early, because he usually opens the show with "The Great Out There". Does anyone have any ideas about how the "believers" there will be able to identify each other? - ------------------------------------------------------ Greetings music lovers. Come hear why Gene Shay, Studs Terkel and Michaela Majoun (among many others) call Greg's songs "great".
