From: "T.R.S." To: Subject: Susan in Philly What better way to celebrate 17 years of marriage than front row seats at Susan's Tin Angel appearance on Saturday (11/29) night? Susan was sublime, as usual, especially when she sat at the piano for a few (I know it's been done, but what about a CD of classic songs from Susan? Anyone agree? Maybe if she sang Cole Porter too ... ) The night's irony was Susan sang several new tunes that turned love on its head, but that was fine with us. We loved them. I have to thank Rich at Serrano/Tin Angel for the best seats in the house (guess he was listening when I told him about our anniversary). Susan seemed energized by the Philly crowd, who hung on every note. She looked great, sang wonderfully, and we left remaining true believers. Was there any doubt? All in all, a fantastic night. Thanks Susan from the guy who handed you the paper towels. Stop by Tom's website if you are planning on visiting Philly, live in Philly, live near Philly, want to know about Philly, or just like great websites, 'cause Tom, you put together a great one! I have been mostly offline the last few weeks due to some computer problems, and a nasty physical problem. I'm sorry I haven't been able to update you on the jobs as frequently as I normally do, but my left hand has mostly been unusable, and when I am pigheaded enough to ignore the pain, I usually pay for it for days afterward. Hopefully, I will be up to speed again by this weekend. In the meantime, please use the resources on the links page to check on Susan's schedule. Remember, this time of year, cancellations can occur, which in Susan's case may mean that she will get the call on short notice, so check in at the schedule sites a lot, especially in the North East and Mid West. One More Thing..... I got a really great Susan story from a member of the e-fan list. If he gives permission to use it, I will send it out tomorrow. Now this guy is a real fan! That's all for now, going for a painkiller and a neck brace -see ya soon! One thing I am sure of is that I feel sorry for the person who has to follow her on stage! I drove up from DC to Philly on Thanksgiving weekend (I forgot about the traffic until I got on I-95!) to see Susan at Tin Angel. I didn't feel part of the "in" crowd up there, but one of the things I've always really appreciated about Susan is that she somehow makes each and every person feel welcome in her presence -- a quintessential performer. I can remember watching her 3 times in one (June) day at the Riverbend festival in Chattanooga. I didn't feel "in" there either -- a foreigner in a blissfully myopic town surrounded by mountains of distrust and disdain. I heard her at the Birchmere when I moved to DC and then I crossed the Chesapeake on a cold, dark night to find a place called Andy's on Maryland's eastern shore. After that show, Susan disappeared down an alley in freezing temperature, catching her breath. I clumsily yelled "thank you" and disappeared too. She warmed my heart the whole way home. In Philly on Saturday, she sang a song that I guess is called "Boomerang". I've lived my life in too many places and have always struggled to be "home"; for any of you who know what I mean, I hope you'll hear this song soon. And Susan, if you read this, I hope that song makes it on your next album ... Sorry to ramble. I'm new here, and I hope I haven't gotten too sentimental. Take care everyone. Feel free to post my previous e-mail to the list; I don't mind at all. Glad you liked it. It never fails that whenever I go to see her perform, planned or not, something out of the ordinary happens that makes it memorable. That's really not so bad if you think about it. Hey, does this mean that I'm published...? G'day, - --Brent "It does so look like her!" - -- Picasso ************************************************************* Greetings, Charlie. Just thought I'd drop you a line to tell you a little about my holiday weekend, which included an unplanned venture to Godfrey Daniel's this past Friday night to catch Susan's show. An old friend was in town visiting family, and we got together for dinner on Friday night. Chris has an interest in good music, so over the months I've been selling him on Susan, and over dinner he asked if anything new had come from her recently. I remembered that she had a show scheduled for that night (which I hadn't planned on attending due to the holiday press - who knew I'd end up going anyway). Being the spontaneous type, he suggested we go and try to catch the show. Not knowing when she would be going on, we called Godfrey's and found that she would be on in 20 minutes. We quickly scarfed the remainder of dinner, got the check, and were off. Well, an hour and a half and a $164 speeding ticket later we walked in the front door about 25 minutes before her last set would end. What could have been a 45 minute trip took much longer thanks to the intervention of the local authorities. Plus the unnerving effect of having a pleasant but very official conversation with a person who carries a loaded firearm caused a temporary lapse in my sense of direction, so we relied on repeated calls to Godfrey's for directions to get us there. While Susan was playing in the show room, we quietly introduced ourselves to the kind folks behind the counter as the poor slobs who needed all the help over the phone. We were lucky enough to still grab a couple of seats in the back near the door to watch her play out the set. It was all new material, at least to me, and one song that really caught my ear was (this is a guess, of course) "Au Naturel" which, drawing from her humorous side, described the battle against gray hair and double chins. Anyway, many thanks are deserved by Rita (the Godfrey's volunteer du jour), the rest of the staff, and of course SW for helping to rescue the evening. This was, however, by FAR the most I've ever wound up spending to see ANYONE in concert. Still worth it. I hope your holiday was as memorable, if not more sane, than mine. Let it slide, - --Brent "Give me ambiguity or give me something else." *********************************************************** Hope you enjoyed this as much as i did!
