Tho I do wonder whether she took some of the other audience members up on their 'tailgating' offer... (several Iowa type jokes about 'pork - the other white meat' ... and she mentioned that her father would be attending the game; hence there *would* be pork there) Schuba's has been a great venue for Susan in Chicago (albeit a bar-type, with smoking - I know not her preferences). Unfortunately last nite there was another show scheduled at 10:30, with 2 bands - so she was rushed off the stage at barely 1:30 of a show. Plus, the woman who has been booking such great music at Schuba's - Anastasia Davis - is leaving this month. Sure hope that doesn't bode poorly for future music ... Because, I imagine, of the tight timeframe, Susan worked pretty well straight through the show, with a bit less than usual of her relaxed between song conversations and comments. Not to say the wit and insights were missing, just a bit more rushed than usual. (I did learn a few new things - to me - from some of the intros) And, only saying it once, briefly - in all the years Susan has been sharing her inner emotions in her material, last night was the first and only time I've seen her break, tearfully, after any song - St. Mary's in particular. She brought things back, but left me feeling she needed a group hug. anyhow, set list (* marks digressions from her originally written setlist) ...and, guys, help me out here - are *all* of the 'new ones' hers??? .. oh yeah - and how come noone told us backwoods Chicagoans about the year-old red electric guitar????? Standing In My Own Way (Dana Cooper) Tappan Zee Old Mistake (with a couple of changes in the 3rd verse) Bad At Love (with a couple of changes) Last of the Good Straight Girls St. Mary's of Regret Petaluma Afternoons (too cheerful to be a Susan song!!! concrete buddahs???? (yes, Sherlyn, they're coming) Bonsai Au Naturele Boomerang * (wasn't on the list, unless I mis-read AuNaturele) (interesting musings on dreams then to the piano for: - Ain't Misbehaving - Much At All (I realize how much 'better' this fits as a bookend to "Cole Porter") - Late For the Dance (??) * (beautiful ballad type, bittersweet) back to guitar: Society Ball/Just the Band Ain't I Lonely Tonight A Pleasure to be Here and the encore(s): - So Heavy (she had "CP", I assume Cole Porter, listed also as an encore, but with the above additions - and the shortened time, we didn't get it ..I'd say 'no complaints', but that isn't true - I, for one , could always take more of Susan & her music!) The front row consisted of 'returnees' from Susan's last Schuba's gig (Gary Matteucci and Rhonda, and another couple whose name I didn't get), and moi - plus a newcomer to her music, who couldn't get over her voice & presence. (yes, he bought recordings). interesting to see the prominently displayed flyer with info on Susan's Internet resources - the NOMA site, and this list! did speak briefly with Jane as she was packing up (if my ability to focus the camera in the dark worked, Jane will be revealed on my website eventually), but then rushed off to catch some friends' gig, and didn't stick around to talk with Susan. Course, when I got up to the coffeehouse, turned out the gig had started an hour earlier than I was told, and I had missed 2/3 of it .. should have stuck around Schubas ) I enjoyed this nearly largely new-to-me repertoire; as always, the metaphors/analogies/whatever (hey! its a weekend - my brain stops working) are quite something ... the songs convey the combination of serious and cutting wit ... unfortunately I again see myself at the *wrong end* of many of the lyrics ... but I'm sure looking forward to the new album, whenever. I also enjoyed the different uses of her voice that Susan is exploring and applying here. oh - for those who follow the fashion report (sorry - another several lists i'm on care about these things) - new duds courtesy of a shopping trip through Marshall Fields (major Chicago dept. store, a fixture of the city but bought out a few years ago by Dayton-Hudson), including red blouse nicely coordinated with the red guitar <-- just a joke on my part). But, in the stage lighting I was rather taken aback at the new blonder, highlighted hair look .. guess that's what led to the Au Naturele choice for the evening's set ... or the demands of sports appearances. (and no, they didn't show 11:54 a.m. even on Fox Chicago!!) enough rambling. back to trash television ... Regards, Carolyn Andre - ------------------- Chicago, IL / USA | Support Independent Music!
