It was my first live hearing and she is the real deal. You always wonder how much is the recording studio, but in her case, very little. Re the performance: one semi-negative first. There was one particularly avid "fan" who kept hoopin' and hollerin' and in a not very succinct manner. I've no problem with an audience shouting out a few words of praise/encouragement/affection, but this woman WOULD NOT SHUT UP, even when Susan tried to respond she'd continue talking over Susan. Very annoying, but fortunately she left after the first set and the remaining packed house of a 100 or so was treated to a great concert. Other than that, we (audience) enjoyed a really nice a interaction with a performer that seemed to have a genuine interest in the surroundings of her gig. She commented that she is fascinated by Bevo (UT's Longhorn mascot) and buys all things Bevo. (The cynic in me wonders whether this is sucking up to the locals, maybe someone can testify about her reaction in other venues). Visually, she is nearly as entertaining as her music and lyrics. This midwestern gal doesn't stop moving! Not in an Elvisey, sexual kind of way, but like someone so charged with the energy of performance that is has to be expressed through means other than voice and guitar/piano. Lastly, she played what I came to hear, i.e., Cole Porter. I love the way she modulates on the MSN version. We got two sets, about an hour apiece and two encores (my date commented that they seemed staged. Nonetheless, it was more Susan and the second one-by request- was My Funny Valentine). She dedicated one tune to Claiborne Pell (an eclectic choice even by Dennis Miller fans). However, the combination of my 3rd gimlet and lack of knowing the lyrics led me to focus on the music and I still don't understand the reference. The only thing I wished she had played was what I consider a heavy Joni Mitchell influence-The Great Out There. If she had been taking more requests I'd like to hear her do Big Yellow Taxi. We also got an opening act, Ron Welch(?), who is apparently a well known Austin singer/songwriter and certainly earned my respect for his 35 minute collection of songs. He had a pretty funny one about being in love with a junker car, which a lot of former/current grad students should identify with well. Overall, I give the evening a 4 1/2 out 5 stars. I'm glad to know I'll be able to say "I say her when", 'cause she has too much performing/musical talent for a wider audience not to enjoy her the way everyone on this list has. I guess she's been playing for so long that it seems more like an appendage than an instrument. I'm also impressed by her education -- is it common for a folk singer to have a masters in music? What we really need is a babysitting coop of SW fans. We never get to go anymore now that we have our daughter. I really wanted to get to the Cherry Tree performance at Penn last week, but, alas, it was not to be. Now that Susan's in the semi-big time, she doesn't play this area as much, so we have to grab the chance when we can. For now, we're living vicariously by listening to "Live at Tin Angel" (and remembering the times we heard her play there)... BTW, for those of you who don't know this: "The Great Out There" is one of the few songs (except for old standards) that Susan didn't write herself. It was written by a fellow Iowan, Greg Simon... The last time I saw her in Shirley, MA (at the Bull Run Restaurant) the town name became a running joke throughout the set. She said something to the effect of, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is all a game. I know I'm coming back you know I'm coming back but I still have to schlep my guitar off stage, you have to clap, I have to act surprised". It was pretty funny. My band and Greggie are in a mutual admiration society and the original words are: "I was born in Delaware and that's where they'll bury me too." But in the interest of accuracy (and 'cause I hate not knowing for sure) I just fired off an e-mail to Greg to find out. Greg's song " Politico's" was covered by Anne Hills. Another local writer who has contributed work to Susan is Tom Gala, who wrote "Shackamaxon Street" and has many wonderful tunes and a beautiful voice. Was Susan born in Delaware too? 'Cos she changed back to singing the original lyrics about a year or so ago, didn't she? We were all very perplexed the first time we heard her sing "Delaware" instead of "Iowa". It was quite funny - I think Susan could see us from the stage because she looked down at our puzzled faces and smirked at us... :) I have another question, this time about one of the new songs, "Rockingham County" (at least, that's what I think it's called, I could be wrong). This is the first verse, from the set of lyrics I transcribed: "I'm driving down to Rockingham County Where the Shenandoah winds between the Chamomile Hills And December sun shines down through the silhouette trees And Virginia knows what a beauty she is" So. I know that Rockingham County is in Virginia, and I know that the Shenandoah (did I spell it right?) is a river. Are there really hills called the Chamomile Hills (I probably spelt that wrong too), or is that just a descriptive title? And are there trees called silhouette trees, or is that another descriptive title? :) sherlyn =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= - -> I will be AWAY from around September 25th to October 5th. <- "Raise your hands, raise your hands high.
