The performer, who calls London and Warsaw, Poland, home, is back in the United States touring and promoting the release of her latest studio album, "It's That Girl Again." Her fans can catch her act live at the Birchmere on Thursday night. Considered her strongest work to date, the album is infused with the trademark pop/jazz sound of Basia and her professional writing and playing partner, keyboardist Danny White. "We write our music together, but I come up with the words," Basia explained. "I try to write songs that people can relate to; that they can sing at home working around the kitchen, if they like." Since leaving Matt Bianco to branch out on their own, Basia and White have continued drawing from the timeless influences of the rhythms and styles of Latin music, the sound of classic American soul and R&B, and the polish of '50s and '60s jazz. Their first album as a team, "Time and Tide," produced three instant single hits for the duo: "Promises," "New Day for You" and "Time and Tide." To date, they have released a total of six studio albums and two live albums; the most current being "From Newport to London," recorded live onstage in Poland. "At Birchmere, we'll play a few songs from each of our albums," Basia continued. "People who know our music will find something they recognize." During her career, Basia earned two consecutive No. 1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz albums upon her second release, "London Warsaw New York," which topped that chart for most of 1990, followed by the breakout success of the single "Cruising for Bruising," resulting in a second platinum record. In 1994, "The Sweetest Illusion" gave her fans "Drunk on Love," which became a No. 1 Billboard Club Play hit, while her accompanying world tour culminated in a two-week run on Broadway, which was recorded for the live album "Basia on Broadway." On the It's That Girl Again Tour, Basia, who thrives on being part of a band on the road, will be joined onstage by musicians including Danny White, guitarist Peter White, trumpeter Kevin Robinson of Simply Red and Incognito, and drummer Marc Parnell. The Birchmere concert marks Basia's fourth time performing in the District. "We love coming here; it's so multicultural" she said. "And Georgetown looks so much like Europe."
