Well it's Friday late night, a little after midnight, and I'm finally getting around to typing an email about the FANTASTIC show Basia and Danny and the band put on at the Ram's Head in Annapolis on Wednesday night, Nov 3, 2010, to a sold out standing room only audience. In a word, it was MAGNIFICENT! She sounded tremendous, she was as energetic as I've ever seen her, the band was tight, the sound mix was superb, each musician was "on", and it was just a fabulous show, absolutely wonderful. Others are sending out songlists for other shows and what I saw earlier matched what I think she played this week in Annapolis. I took a few pics and will forward them when I can, but the bottom line is that she sounded great, and performed beautifully. One observation: it's a smaller band than in the past. The could have been a "Rams Head" thing more than anything, it's not a huge stage there. Basia, Danny, Clarrisse sisters, and . forgive me folks, I'm not going to get names here but the instruments were . sax, drums, guitar. For that combination they sounded remarkably full, and as full and melodiously energetic as you could imagine. But for example, you know how "Third Time Lucky" has the instrumental build-up at the end, where Danny does that brilliant piano riff? Well of course they didn't have the horns to repeat it, so they just did the radio-airplay-edited approach and omitted that part. If had any complaints, that would be it. But in perspective, everything else was 100 times 100 times a million on steroids, and that instrumental sacrifice was about a negative 2. So on balance, the show was MAGNIFICENT! Did I mention that already? It was FANTASTIC! I'd go again in heartbeat every night and twice on Sundays. Also - it was terrific to run into Joe Rozier at the show, and his lovely companion, that was just icing on the cake to find another "smoe" list member, although I should say he found me, apparently I sent this pic around enough after the last time I saw Basia in Atlanta that it's made me a bit easier to spot: http://corbinian.com/gallery/2005_04_19_Steve_OHearn_Basia_Trzetrzelewska.ht m We all lingered a bit after the show and encores, and the Clarisse sisters very graciously came out to chat for a bit. Turns out they were all based in Baltimore for the week as they performed in other venues around the area. The Baltimore-Washington area is pretty dense and a lot of venues. They ended up selling out the Ram's Head so quickly that another night was added, earlier than the original, so by the time we saw them there it was their second performance at that location, with another slipped in between elsewhere, and they were on their way to the Birchmere next, that's a DC area legend of a venue. And by now I'm sure they've moved on. I would've LOVED to go to all of those shows, but personally I've been swamped with work-related projects, working long hours and weekends and that event was the only non-work anything I've done in about a six week span of time, I wasn't going to miss that. It was terrific. So folks - for those who get a chance - GO! You'll love it, she's back baby, and sounding just as great as she ever has. - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 2010 01:06:33 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: 1989 - Basia on Letterman Friends - There are a bunch of interesting videos showing up on YouTube featuring Basia that I've not seen before, including this one of her performing on the David Letterman show, the title says it's from 1989: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD0l0ySjLeU - - Steve ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V14 #124 ****************************
