My wife and I got tickets for the 8PM show right after Leslie put the dates online. I've seen one event there before, and it was a nice place, very supper-clubby. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 2010 15:28:22 -0400 From: Paxety Pages Subject: Jacksonville Show OK, finally back from work. The show was a few minutes late getting started, and Basia said one of the back-up singers had just arrived from the airport The start was a little shaky, perhaps because of the late arrival, perhaps because they opened with one of the new songs, If Not Now Then When. Following, they went into some of the older numbers and the crowd really reacted. The band loosened up noticeably. Thelma and Lonnie kept the set list, so they'll have to report on that. I was very surprised to hear them perform Astrud and Miles Away. I love the songs, but they weren't bit hits. They messed up the ending of one song, and I was very happy to see that Basia and all laughed about it and made a joke. So many performers would have thrown a fit and stormed off the stage. The singing was wonderful. You could tell Basia and the twin backup singers have worked together for a long time. What are their names? Last night, I mentioned the lack of a bass player. The guitar player played bass on a few songs, but most songs had Danny playing bass on a keyboard. That's not his strength. If anything was lacking, it was that no one took control of the bottom of the band and held things together. A bass player or drummer does this. The drummer last night was a very good finesse player, but didn't really seize control. As a result, there was a little rhythmic instability. But then, I was probably the only one who noticed. My biggest surprise was seeing that there are a lot of Basia fans in town - fans who are not on this list. Ha. Thelma and Lonnie are delightful. I enjoyed meeting them very much. I don't know what kind of bread it was, but I kept peeking at it in the bag. I barely managed to keep from sneaking a pinch. It was a wonderful show - filled with favorite songs from all of the albums. Basia was loose and easy and can still hit the high notes. I'm so excited I'm pulling out one of my axes and starting to practice. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 2010 14:39:34 -0500 From: Bev Okin-Larkin Subject: Re: NY show on Wednesday Ben!!!!!! She had to literally get ready for the gig on the plane, and her flight had like three stopovers. But it sounds like she rocked it! They were with her in the '94 and '05 tours too. They also sang for Erasure tours in the early 90s. About 15 people screamed the correct pronunciation of her name. One old geezer in a Panama hat, who is a member of this list, thereafter taunted the guy by yelling for him to pronounce her last name. He didn't take the bait. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 2010 19:34:02 -0400 From: Paxety Pages Subject: Re: Jacksonville Show They each got to sing lead on a song apiece. That was interesting, too, as one doesn't often see a star allow backup singers the spotlight. My impression is that Basia is very comfortable within herself.
