Lewis- Are you familiar with the phrase- "Poke the bear"? :-) I think you just did it! I bought my copy at a Barnes & Noble in Atlanta, GA. I was just back there 2 days ago to purchase something else, and there were several copies of ITGA on the shelf. Actually made me smile. She went gold in Poland- that's an indicator. But honestly, none of that really matters to me. I would be happy with the album if she made only one copy and handed to me for my own enjoyment, and never sold another copy of it. (I would *not* be happy for Basia though, I truly wish her the best of success with all the work she does.) I love the new album. Were it on vinyl, I would have begun to wear it out already. But don't take my opinion- I'm VERY biased. I love Basia. I don't mean "I love her music", I mean I love *her*- the person. She has all the best virtues that I consider important. I know of no other artist with her depth of passion and sense of the "joy of life". I know of few artists that share her quality of character. The fact she can sing with a quality no one else can match is nice too! So to your question- "does she still have the magic?", I'd say YES!! Pros: Her voice is as good, probably better than ever. The production is beautiful. Pretty much no out and out bad songs. Cons: Few stand out songs. I'm more of a pop/R&B Basia fan than a jazz/samba Basia fan, so I'm pretty screwed on this CD. If you are the latter, you will probably be in heaven. Put it this way. All three of her previous albums contributed songs to my 10 favorite Basia songs list. I don't think anything from this album makes my top 15. - --- On Tue, 5/19/09, Lewis Bailey wrote: > From: Lewis Bailey > Subject: How good is the new CD? > To: basia@smoe.org > Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009, 6:12 AM > > Howdy all! > I went into a borders in Norman, Ok to buy the new CD. Ok, I'm not as fanatical as Sam so I can give a 'slightly' less biased opinion of the new CD. After first play I have to admit I was not falling over backwards. I had doubts about it's long term sticking power. After 3 times trough the CD tunes started falling into the category of " As good as anything Basia has ever done". I found myself humming a couple. After quite a few more plays, I have 3 or 4 songs that I would put up in her top 20, and only 1 that I would say I wouldn't miss at all and I bet that ONE is a favorite of quite a few listeners. lol I have it mixed in now with a Basia 'group on both my MP3 player and comp and while I lean towards the 'live' tunes, I enjoy this CD just as much as all the others. Hey, it's great to hear from rarely-heard-from posters! The opinions seem to be across the board with this album, especially with individual songs, like I'll hear that the "standout track" is any one of seven, then someone will comment that they don't care for a song, and it will be one of those. It's really interesting! For my part I tend to draw a real line between the more electronic albums, like T&T and LWNY, and the albums that contain bands, like TSI and ITGA. I have put away the older music for a while to freshen it up, but I'm playing ITGA all the time. TSI is what I consider her apex, I'd put ITGA right up there. When they were gone I always wondered what they could have accomplished had they followed up TSI, ITGA fullfills that promise while being "of the now" to me. It's great overall having the luxury of enough albums to have a favorite or least-favorite now! Ok, now that the "bear" has calmed down... :-) I looked at Amazon.com- ITGA rated 4.5 out of 5 with 22 reviews, and most spoke well of the album. Other sites had high ratings as well. My favorite- "I Must". I love the Latin\Samba stuff! I suspect this will make it on to a dance show sometime, and if anyone sees it done a quick note would be appreciated! So far the only rendition has been my wife and I (nope, I'm not putting it on YouTube!). And yes, my wife knows I love Basia- for those considering blackmail! :-) I find the rest of the songs very likeable. If I were to give any "criticism" to any of the songs, it would Amelki Smelch. I personally like it, more so now that Krysia has given me the English lyrics (Thanks!)- but I will admit that it is not likely to add to the commercial appeal of the album. I think she's earned the right to "indulge" a bit! Lewis- I told them to bring the album, but you only get to listen to it *once *before you go! :-) - -Good day to all! Hi Krysia- It's a reference to a famous gangster that shares my same name. Sam "Ace" Rothstein was a gangster in Vegas back in the 70's and 80's. He was made more famous by the movie "Casino" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_(film) If you don't care for excessive cussing- you probably would not like it! - -Sam On Tue, May 19, 2009 at 1:00 PM, Krysia Szurek wrote: > Sam, > There is something about you what I am not aware of? - I am asking based on > the discussion below :-) > > Take care, > Krysia > > > From: lewis@sharpshootertv.com > > To: samm.rothstein@gmail.com > > CC: basia@smoe.org > > Subject: Re: How good is the new CD? > > Date: Tue, 19 May 2009 11:01:27 -0400 > > > > > > > Sam, > > Please send new Basia CD with your people when they come to visit. > > :) > > Lewis > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: Sam Rothstein > > To: Lewis Bailey > > Sent: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 10:43 AM > > Subject: Re: How good is the new CD? > > > > > > Lewis- > > > > Saw your pics. Find out ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 May 2009 22:51:41 +0200 From: Krysia Szurek Subject: RE: How good is the new CD? Lewis, Sam and Phil are right! But actually I am glad that you've "poked that bear" ;-) But haven't you heard it or you just wanted to start some discussion here? :-) Well, I don't think I am trustable either, cause I am very biased! Couldn't be else! I started to listen to her as a kid - I was maybe 10 or 11. She is much more to me than just an idol. She is part of my life! A very important part! Not only they had a huge influence on my musical taste, but also the part in shaping the person I am now. My life would not be the same without Basia! Deffinitely! It was that music that was always making my life brighter and making me believe that life is and can be much more, to go out there with brave new hope in my heart even if things go wrong sometimes. You ask if there is still magic? Man!!! Tons of it! I think it was that magic she conquered and is still conquering me with! When I heared about the new album, although I was praying for it for such a long time, I was wondering whether it can take the place of the previous ones. But later I came to the conclusion that it doesn't have to at all. This album would be important for me only because it means so much for them! But somewhat they conquered me very quickly again! At first I was comparing some motives to songs from previous albums but quickly they became separate beings for me. Right now, same as Leslie, I listen to the CD all the time. But I came to the conclusion that I really needed that long break too! To look at her with new eyes, to come to the conclusion that the childish love developed into a true and longlasting admiration for the true artist she is. To appreciate her as she really deserves it and to realize how much I missed her! And yeah, how much I still love her :-) It is still her, the voice and depth of passion (that Sam mentions) that can not be mistaken, and the beautiful person I always imagined she is. It is so great to read about her in the magazines and listen to the interviews. I feel very happy, as if I was hearing good things about somebody really close to my heart! But I have to tell one thing - I would rather say "it's that woman again" - she has lived some things during those years and I can also hear in her voice. And some songs (at least 5) from ITGA became quickly part of my top. But honestly speaking - for me all Basia songs are top!!! There are some that are especially close to my heart (some from ITGA are already among them) but she doesn't have bad songs! I think that reveals her quality as an artist and makes me believe that she respects her fans ;-) From Poland, Krysia > From: PParm16424@aol.com > Date: Tue, 19 May 2009 11:09:15 -0400 > Subject: Re: How good is the new CD? > To: basia@smoe.org > > > Lewis, > > Sam is right.
