I have learned that there are holes in my knowledge as to how things work. Like a couple weeks ago, I posed to a message board and someone who writes for a blog wanted it made very easy for him: why wasn't there a image of the cover immediately on the site (I don't think he bothered to look through the site), why didn't they have a press contact to he could get a copy of the CD... things I don't know. I didn't even respond because it was taking focus off the point: to tell FANS that a new album was coming. 'Cause that's all I really know how to do. ;) I send people to write to management, they write me back to say they don't hear anything... granted requests have varying levels of legitimacy and are probably getting weeded out (some of the stuff I get is... something) but yeah. I'm not too useful apart from rah rah-- there's always a point where I have to send people into the ether to figure it out themselves. However, it's sort of stunning how many don't even want to bother clicking on the link to get the the manager's contact info. I don't know it it's laziness or what but it drives me nuts. During this album cycle I think it may become evident that labels are useful for distribution only. Danny and Basia are from the days of the label, agents and managers doing everything for you, and musicians could just make their art and go where they were sent. Now, the artists themselves have to be on the marketing team too. Thankfully they are getting in the swing of posting info and sending out notices, which is great cause once that album and tour hits it will be a job in itself! Judging from that Koch media pack thingy it looks like they have a whole new team (except I think they used CAA before) and here's hoping they make their fees worthwhile. Couple these issues with others: lack of brick-and mortar record stores, lack of local radio... in the past we would talk to our favorite record store guys, call up our local smooth jazz station... it's harder now to take action. So use your Internet circle to spread things around. Spamming message boards does no one any good because you get regarded as a shill and no one takes you seriously, but if you are a fixture on a message board and have credibility, let them know the album is coming, or start a thread in Off Topic about artists you like, oh and hey, here's someone with a new album I love (maybe wait until samples are available on Amazon or something). You never know. Personally, I don't post to as many message boards as I once did. My online time is cut drastically and I might have to downgrade to a desktop unit I can only hit once or twice a day. I have to reiterate: please don't spam though because it undermines the cause. ;) Be intelligent about your street-teaming if you do it. Pick venues where people would at least be receptive! An aside: The music on ITGA is so strong that I hope they aren't always going to be selling her on her past. I think of the people in their late 20s-30s who would not remember her but enjoyed people similar enough to her the past few years (Bebel, Sia, Madeleine P., that crowd) would just like her music for it's own sake. The album stands on its own, History of Basia is not always necessary. Sometimes Matt's Mood got bogged down in the history, and most people in the US did not care. (THOUGH THEY SHOULD! lol) I know they are trying to trigger memory for people who liked her before, but there's more than that here. Haha, I just had a cup of coffee, cantcha tell. You know me, I like to throw a whole lot of thoughts out there and see what sticks. I am certain nothing in here hasn't been though of by Basia's crack team already! - --Leslie (writing chiefly from an American perspective today, YMMV.) - ----- Original Message ---- From: Bev Okin-Larkin To: basia@smoe.org Sent: Sunday, February 22, 2009 3:33:58 PM Subject: Re: FINALLY a listing on the Koch site Marc, (shakes head) I know, but something is better than NOTHING Since all we could see on Koch records site before that was just alternative acts anyway. (Something like that.) Well, I have a compliment for you like that, but first I have to set it up, so that it makes sense. I started a Yahoo group for my high school graduating class a few years ago. Over time, through online research, I assembled the list of over 400 classmates, and obtained current addresses for nearly all of them, sent out announcements about the group, have sent out notices when a classmate or their parents have passed away, sent sympathy cards out, set up birthday reminders online and sent out birthday cards. The group has grown to 77, so far and we will be having our first "get-together" in two weeks, the first since 2002. I have posted many files. links and photos, etc. etc. on the site. I have gotten many words of appreciation from the group, as no one else has taken the lead to reunite the class. Anyway, the thought that came to me was that "I had become the 'Leslie' to my high school class". I hadn't thought about it that way. It just came to my mind that way. But your name has become synonymous with someone who is ambitious, motivated, and thorough, and I know that I am not the only one to feel that way. To become the "Leslie" is indeed a high honor. :) Phil P. In a message dated 2/23/2009 1:27:32 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, marzenie_99@yahoo.com writes: Aw, thanks for the compliment. Yes, obviously I did. :) Actually Leslie, I was referring to all the hard work and vision that culminated in you being linked personally to both Danny and Basia, not merely some emails. :) Anyway, I would be interested to hear what ended up being "Yay" and what ended up being "Yikes" in your gathering. Should be interesting, no doubt. In our group, we are all mid-fifties, some haven't seen each other since high school, 37 years ago. There are bound to be some "Yikes" there, too. Phil P.
