I9m familiar with many of the suggestions and somewhat of a fan of some of them. There were also several I know nothing about and I9m excited to explore their music. Kitty9s suggestion of Kevyn Lettau (with whom I9m not familiar) is quite interesting. A favorite of mine has a similar background. Pamela Driggs is married to the magnificent Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo. She9s a New Yorker who fell in love with Brazil. She too seems to speak Portuguese (or at least sing it) like a native. She has only one CD, but it is wonderful. I saw her live at the Telluride Jazz Festival in 2006 performing with Romero. It was quite amazing how great just the two of them sounded. Pamela falls into the more traditional Brazilian singer mold, a la Flora Purim, Astrud Gilberto, Ana Caram, etc., all of whom are wonderful. Another favorite jazz singer of mine is Karrin Allyson. Karrin is so versatile that she can sing mainstream jazz (she9s a big Coltrane fan) and Brazilian jazz equally well. She even does French jazz beautifully. She would not show up on Smooth Jazz stations and yet some of her music and some of Basia9s is definitely the same genre. Years ago, I used to listen to another Polish jazz artist, a violinist named Michael Urbaniak. This was before CD9s when I was in college and I don9t have anything of his on CD. I remember that he performed with his wife, also Polish, named Urszula Dudziak. She was, in her way, as interesting and unusual as Basia. Does she still record? Does she know Basia? Was Basia influenced by her? I noticed a couple fans living in Poland on this list and I9m curious if they are also Urszula Dudziak fans. They have some jazz there. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-basia@smoe.org [mailto:owner-basia@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Steve Lesgold Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2008 3:14 PM To: basia@smoe.org Subject: Thanks for the info I appreciate the replies and it9s interesting to see how far-flung Basia9s fans are!
