Yep, I will be 46 tomorrow... going to Jury Duty today.... :) I have had a wonderful b-day weekend with my family and church fellowship, and as always I am thankful for our internet friendship we share through our mutual love of Basia's work. Hi. I9m new to the list and would like to know if there is anything known about a US tour in the foreseeable future. Also, although Basia is unique, I9m wondering what other artists people like who like Basia. Basia seems to be pegged as a smooth jazz artist and I don9t care for most smooth jazz. I think of her as more of a Latin Jazz artist who isn9t Latin and I love Latin Jazz. So, for somebody who isn9t a smooth jazz fan, who else should I be listening to? There are so many people to list, and I'm sure a lot of people here will give great suggestions. Two of my favorites (beyond the incomparable Basia) are Kelly Sweet and Corinne Bailey Rae. Welcome to the group, it's a great resource for all things Basia. Barry "Do not go where the path may lead. Hi Steve, I'm in Green Bay. You picked a hard question, because I think Matt Bianco and Basia express their latin appreciation and influence in such a UNIQUE way. I listen to smooth jazz all the time. Basia's songs are very different than the average smooth jazz song and really do stand out. One of my all-time favorites though, would be Sergio Mendez and Brazil '66. Love love love them!!! Perez Prado is always fun, more Cuban big band style. Quincy Jones has a lot of Bossa Nova music out there too. Of course there's always Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Elaine Alias is definitely Brazilian influenced music. Kevyn Lettau is a fantastic singer from California. I think she married Sergio Mendez's drummer if I'm not mistaken. A lot of her music is definitely latin influenced. Her Portuguese is absolutely flawless!!! - -----Original Message----- From: owner-basia@smoe.org [mailto:owner-basia@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Steve Lesgold Sent: Monday, April 07, 2008 11:46 AM To: basia@smoe.org Subject: New to list - any news on a US tour? Basia and Danny are putting the finishing details on a new album, so a tour is foreseen, upon the CD's release. More info is at http://www.basiaweb.com. I, too, am waay disenchanted with smooth jazz. But, check out Brian Bromberg's latest CD called "Downright Upright" which features smooth jazz artists doing straight-ahead jazz. Really cool! A couple of vocalists I am really enjoying are Sophie Millman and Connie Evingson. Great to see someone new on the list-- welcome! Kitty had great suggestions-- I'd also throw in Swing Out Sister, Incognito.. wow, there's a lot of places you can go. Or big influencers on Basia and Danny's work-- Stevie Wonder and Donald Fagen. Aretha. Pat Metheny. (over the years they've said a lot of really cool people!) I'm right with you on the assessment of Smooth Jazz-- the stations that launched Basia into the American consciousness have sadly either gone the way of the dodo or the way of the boring crap! they've never really belonged there IMHO but hey, if they play their music, thats all good! As for touring that will depend on the album release. They want to and were hoping to go out this year. It's a really, really, really bad year for a new album to come out. Both industries are hanging by a string (apologies to Slpit Ends!) and smooth jazz stations are closing right and left, almost at the rate of one a week-- it's a dying format but still influences opinions of label people. Boo. Hopefully soon there will be some good news! Keep checking here- http://www.basiaweb.com for the latest. :) Leslie O.
