At some point (usually at the beginning) in the lesson, they will begin to pick out a melody by ear, and every time it is something popular many years before they were born, like the bass line from "Smoke On the Water", the intro to "Centerfold", or the latest one, the bass line on "Sunshine Of Your Love". Two students, a brother age 9 and sister age 11, (unbeknownst to me, originally) are big time "Queen" fans, and are now working on a couple of their songs. Obviously, their parents have exposed them to the music, but it seems nicely strange that the students gravitate to music from decades ago. Never does that happen with any songs from the last 10 years or so. That would seem to speak to the effect (or lack thereof) of more current music.

Man, naming a boy is hard! Girls have so much leeway in theirs. Yes, it is my first. :D I was expecting last year but it didn't work out, so this has been a joy. Two other cousins of mine are also expecting-- one had a girl two weeks ago-- so this infusion of new life has done our family good after all the death. All this has definitely made me think a lot about a lot of things in life, that be for sure. Trust me when I say the whole tale is awful and it's no wonder that it's a sore spot. To compare the radio of then to the radio of now is just apples and oranges, with all the lack of human element and more corporate overlording over the radio of today-- as opposed to the strong DJs that loved music and got records played (we'll leave payola aside! lol). And of course the record companies are going to pander to this and have been for a long time. Most anything compared to Respect is going to fail-- Respect was a rare transcendant song and performance that spoke to people in ways that is rare for song to do.
