Would bet that the artist was the legendary Cornelius Bumpas. I was fortunate enough to see SD in St. Paul MN in the fall of 2003 and got to witness his artistry(his sidekick with the alto was excellent too). Mr. Bumpas must've had some clout in the music industry, as he rated an article in our local Waterloo Iowa newspaper when he died unexpectedly. Man, he blew some fine notes on AJA and Deacon Blues and much of that stellar album. Anybody know if he ever did any solo work? I wasn't a big fan of the song FM, and I think the movie was somewhat of a loser, but maybe I need to watch it again. The band had hired me to take photographs. The guys in the band were all in their mid-40s to early 50s, and played mostly soul and funk songs (website www.chainoffools.net). Anyway, the crowd was the usual mix of folks you'd find in a bar - 20s to mid-30s. The song that got the most folks up dancing and singing along was Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" (another 1967 song). Other than the band and me, there was not a person in the bar that was born when that song was released. I was amazed that the crowd appreciated it. Stage presence and looks have taken precedence over singing ability in the music business today. After all, you can electronically bend a pitch into tune and electronically boost the volume of a singer who does not know how to use breath support. Don't ask them to sing live, though. For all my reservations about American Idol, at least the contestants are made to sing live and the voters seem to make selections more or less on singing ability rather than looks - otherwise the finals this year would have been between Haley and someone. I think and hope I'm making criticism on a musical basis, not as an old man ranting about youth. I do find Fergie interesting. un abrazo, juan Steve Richardson wrote: > > And of course we're also at the 40 year anniversary of "SGT Pepper." > 1967 - what an incredible time it was...Hendrix, Cream, CCR, Motown, > all the amazing Atlantic Records soul artists...so many others at > their peak or about to bust out. > > And what do we see on the charts 40 years later? I gave the students the choice to play something non-Christmas if they wanted to. I had tried to learn that song by ear for years, but never completed it until about last fall. NOT an easy song to learn that way. (SD songs are rarely simple at all.) I have the SD Anthology, but FM is not included in that, and didn't want to buy another large book just to get that one song. Of course, there was no sax solo at the end. Had my hands full as it was, don't cha know! :) Phil P.

Subject: Re: OT congrats! At 49? For the first time? Wow! Most people, esp. where I live, think that when we are 30s but have not got married yet, it would be a trouble! Both of my brothers are 33 and 31, and I myself will be 30 this year but none of us are married yet: surely, it makes our parents a little bit worried because most of our school/univ. friends have already had their second or third babies, now. But I would not have such thought in my mind because I believe that every person is unique and has his/her own time: we cannot force others to do the exact things or patterns of life. So, congratulations to you, Jim! I wish you have a great wedding ceremony and may your marriage last forever, happily ever-after! :-) ---- Czesc, Desianto F.
