This was a great post, Thelma. This past weekend I spent in Boulder visiting a friend I met online originally, for a party celebrating the release of her original sculpture, and I was a guest in her home all weekend. I met about six online friends at the party as well. The next morning I had a wonderful breakfast at Chapatqua (sp!) with another online friend, who took me to the airport. It was a wonderful trip and I would never have taken it otherwise. In fact I just spent the day today with a good friend of mine- we met on the same online community of scale-model hobbyists as I met all these other people and now we are close friends. All these wonderful people in my life, because of the internet! The same here. While I have met one member of smoe in person and that's Danny (lol!) I've been so inspired by my other hobby's meet-ups that I think it would be awesome to travel on the next tour and see other places and other fans. I was very shy at the MB tour and met no one else, but I think judging from these other experiences it would be great. - -- Leslie O. www.basiaweb.com / www.gruentransfer.com "btw...a vast proportion of bad lyrics are overly serious, unimaginative lyricists abusing the word "soul". On that last point, I'm not sure I understand how that fits in. What do you mean? It would be so cool to have a mass donation "from basia@smoe.org group in honor of Tom Neill, superfan" or something but I can't think of a way to do it that doesn't spell ethical trouble in terms of collecting donations. Crap! But I think we can still do some good here- I'd love to let people know on BasiaWeb as well as the other groups if we do end up having a bunch of fans send donations in Tom's name. Even if it's just five of us, who knows, maybe it could spur others on to do the same. It's cool that it's just a matter of posting a link to their site and people can decide what they wish to do or not. A donation is a way better idea than flowers- and at the end of the day I couldn't really afford to get a proper arrangement for a funeral, as much as I would like to. But any amount helps the ACS, no matter how small. Thanks so much for bringing this up. Anyone have further thoughts? - --Leslie Tired of spam? Yahoo! You can select what type of donation this is - select MEMORIAL. Then it asks for the name of our person - Thomas Neill - and has a place to write a note to Kelly and the family. I've decided to use the address of the Roper and Sons memorial home for the card as I feel they will forward it on to Kelly. I am going to use the body of the note to mention that I was on basia@smoe with Tom. That way people can donate what they feel willing in their heart. I would say put that info on the BasiaWeb page and we all will work from there, each in our own way to honor Tom. - -- Bev Okin-Larkin Leslie O. wrote: >>Leslie, >> >>Actually, I was thinking maybe we should (those who >>wish to and can) >>make a donation to the American Cancer Society in >>Tom's name. >> >>We could all mention Basia. >> >> > >On that last point, I'm not sure I understand how that >fits in. Thank you. :) Someone should do one in the name of the list too (if they wish to or think about it). Kelly knows about us here on smoe and our connection to Tom, and it's really great that we can come out of the woodwork to show support to her in this difficult time. I'm going to do a little write-up for BasiaWeb in a few, here- I get far more site traffic than our mailing lists represent, so who knows who else may be so inspired to contribute to the ACS, or even to cancer fighting organizations in their home country. Another way to honor Tom? Put in some tunes, and play them loud. I drove through the hills of Napa yesterday doing just that! - --Leslie O. - --- Bev Okin-Larkin wrote: > Folks, > > Well I completed mine. Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 13:45:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Lochlaer Subject: Fighting cancer Hey, everyone. I post here very occasionally, and I probably don't feel as close to Tom as many of you do. However, I was also stunned by what seemed to be the sudden onset of his disease and the end of his life. A friend's father recently succumbed to a particularly aggressive cancer. The time from his diagnosis to his last day was measured not in months, but in weeks. As you probably already know, one of the reasons that cancer is so hard to beat is that it is not a single disease. It has many causes and takes many forms. I think the donations to ACS are a great idea, but I have another idea that could help us beat Tom's killer. And considering that ours is an online community, I think it would be great if we could do this. Many of you may know about distributed computing because of the very popular SETI@Home project (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/). For those who don't, the basic idea is this: Say that a scientist has a problem to solve. It requires processing a tremendous amount of raw data. He needs a supercomputer, but can't get access to one for his project. So instead of a single supercomputer, he uses hundreds of desktop computers, each crunching a small packet of data, then sending it back to the scientist's computer. He solves his problem and the world becomes a better place for it. There are many projects using distributed computing. For detailed info about DC and some of the projects, check out these links: http://www.hyper.net/dc-howto.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_distributed_computing_projects http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html Here's where we come in. Some of these projects are involved in cancer research. wouldn't it be great if we could all contribute some of our spare computing power to help science defeat cancer? We can even form a team, call it "Basiaweb's Friends of Tom Neill" or "Tom@basiaweb.com" or something. All of our individual contributions would be added together. It would be cool to see how our combined computing power contributes to the end of this epidemic. ...I'm starting to ramble. Anyway, we can all discuss which project(s) we want to support. I think we should pick projects that are compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux so that no one is left out. These look especially good: Folding@Home: http://folding.stanford.edu/ Help Defeat Cancer: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewHdcResearch.do Rosetta@Home: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ Personally, I also think that we should choose a project that runs on a BOINC client (see the links a few paragraphs above). That would enable us to run two or more projects on each machine. (Good for those of us who also want to support malaria research or some other cause). What do you think?
