It nearly happened when he came back to his family's roots in Wales earlier this year. I was trying to get him to come to London to join myself and Fenbydale (from the Basia2 group) at The Peter/Danny White show, but logistics just got in the way. He seemed talented, patient, kind and most of all a good, fun guy. A terribly sad loss to all. R.I.P. This message was just in my inbox: "Hi, The service for Tom will be at 11am Friday, August 25th at Roper & Sons at 4300 O St. Visitation: Thursday 2-9 pm at Roper & Sons Thank you for all of the calls, emails and support. Kelly" I've never before cried for a friend that I only know in our world of crudely rendered text over mere pixels. But we have been quite a group all these years and what we know about one another is so much more than that. Tom is one of those people that really sticks out in our community- his sense of humor is always what I think of most. He came up with some of the most hilarious posts and had a great point of view on music- and ALL music, from punk to more familiar ground. And talk about a fan- he was booting shows as early as 1988! That's about as close I came to ever meeting him, hearing the occasional comment on the KC Masterpiece ("That guy is a *great* piano player!"). Cancer needs to be stopped. Damn it. It's taken far too many of our best. - --Leslie Tired of spam? Yahoo! Usually when something different happens it makes me start thinking (dangerous!) and I have been thinking about Tom and how I have never met him but feel sad for his passing. I use to say to my children when they would play video games for hours upon hours with people all around the world over the internet that they were just "virtual friends." I had an old uncle who said that the connections founded on the internet were just acquaintances and not real friends. That is where I got the idea to tell my kids that about virtual friends. I have changed my mind. Having communicated with some of the "real" people I met at the Basia concert tells me my uncle was indeed "old" and that friendships in this day are formed in a "new" way. Once my son was working on creating a website for someone and was having trouble getting the site to open in a certain format. He was playing a game with someone and mentioned what he had been working on. They said to zip it over to them and they could help. A little while later it was returned to him fixed and he came out of the room to me with a printed piece of paper and said... "Mom ! Virtual friends with REAL solutions." I just thought I would throw that in... Thanks to Basia for connecting this unique group of people/friends.
