That always makes me crazy, when an artist says they can't stand singing one of their hits, especially when it's the one that made them a star, and the one everyone expects to hear. Seems to me to be one short step from the artist saying, "my fans are tasteless idiots for wanting to hear that song." Let's be honest. ;-P When I used to listen to Pop and Smooth Jazz, I really despised covers, in general (along with pre-programmed playlists of a very limited library). I think it was because most of the people doing the covers don't have the talent/skill or independence/individuality to make the song "their own." If I wanted to hear something that sounded like the original, I would get the original and not waste my time with an obvious "copy." I started listening to "straight-ahead", or traditional, JAZZ because I loved Dixieland, and Big Band and Swing. I've come to appreciate the whole realm of straight-ahead Jazz, while also realizing Smooth Jazz, in general, is NOT JAZZ, but is music with jazz elements (I also love not having stupid, inane, senseless, repetitious commercials taking up 10-15 minutes of every hour). JZZ, with its 80 plus year history, has a lot of covers; 60%, or more, of everything is a cover of something. For examples, John Coltrane does a cover of "My Favorite Things;" Miles Davis does a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time;" and Mel Tormi does a cover of Donald Fagen's "Goodbye Look." All of them are excellent covers. All of them sound like they own the song. But, that is one of the MAJOR differences from Smooth Jazz; JAZZ is largely about improvisation and being an individual, and those that develop a career in JAZZ are very skilled at improvisation and being individuals. When I hear covers, in the JAZZ realm, I recognize the source, but I don't "HEAR" the original, I hear Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nora Jones, Mel Tormi, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Etta Jones, Diana Krall, etc. doing a song they have made "their own." I have felt all along that Basia is more connected with JAZZ than Smooth Jazz, because she has that skill to establish her individuality. When I hear "Till You come Back To Me," I only hear Basia; I don't hear Stevie Wonder. The same analogy applies to the snippet of "Smooth Operator" that I heard. I know it's Sade's song, but all I could hear was Basia, because it wasn't Sade's song, any longer. I, also, am eager to savor the full version, if it's ever released. - ---- Stephen Ylvisaker greyfell@gns2000.com "...decide...whether or not the goal is worth the risks involved.
