Leslie - I think you're talking about me. My very close friend Todd dated her in high school. I first met Eva and Todd's house, his mother introduced us while Todd was out one day. But she was shy as all get out. Eva just looked at me - I think. She had her hair in her face, so it was hard to tell. And she spoke so quietly I wasn't sure if she'd actually said anything. Todd and I had grown up together, cub scouts and more, and at ten years old, I'd been taking guitar lessons for all of 3 months when my mother had me play "Jingle Bells" for our cub scout group. Todd was enamored by this new-fangled gui-tar, so after the rest of the cubs went home, there we were, two ten-year old boys, talking about guitar, I showed him what I knew, and he told me he wanted one himself. Within a couple of weeks, he was taking lessons from the same teacher. And he started slow. I took to it more quickly. But we'd get together and play, he was - first and foremost - my best friend, two only children who agreed to be brothers to each other. By 15, I was getting involved with local start-up rock bands, and by 16 signed a talent agency contract with a working professional band in the DC area. I hadn't seen Todd in a couple of years when I found myself at his house down the street that day and was being introduced by his mother to his girlfriend Eva. She didn't engage in conversation at all, and was quickly gone to the garage, where she and Todd had their amps and microphones set up. The Todd I remembered from a couple of years earlier was just an OK guitar player at best. And Eva was so quiet I couldn't even tell if she had a speaking voice, let along a singing ability. But when Todd told me his band was performing at the Prince George's Community College Queen Anne Arts Theater, I decided to go see him, just for old times sake. And I wasn't expecting anything good. They were easily the greatest band I've ever heard, before or since. They performed Yes' "Close To The Edge", in its entirety, as well as the final cut from "Relayer", Bruford, and Heart's "Mistral Wind". I could probably get Todd to remind me of the rest, I think he would still remember. All I kept thinking was that I was stunned - STUNNED - that there were all of 30 or 40 people in a theater that could seat 1,000. And that they needed to be at Carnegie Hall or the Kennedy Center or something instead. None of us - none - nobody - is surprised at what's happened with Eva's music. The only thing that surprised us is that (a) it didn't happen sooner, and (b) it hasn't happened yet with the others. - - Steve > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-basia@smoe.org [mailto:owner-basia@smoe.org]On Behalf Of > Leslie Osborn > Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2005 10:42 PM > To: basia@smoe.org > Subject: RE: Just want to speak quietly..... > > > > Brain cells firing slowly over here... but from what I > remember someone on here knew Eva Cassidy personally > and may have played with her or had a friend who > played with her...?
