I have a (foggy) memory of Michael Jackson's lawyers, after he gained control of the Beatle's songs, preventing the Beastie Boys from putting a recording they made of a Beatles tune ("Help?") on one of their albums. I haven't heard it yet, but it sounds like he's attempting the ironic humor bandwagon-hopping? Or is he serious? I think if he's sucking but it's funny maybe it might be OK ;-) Not that I've ever been inclined to "check out" Paul Anka... WTF? But the Pat Boone metal covers album was a sleeper hit in college! Contrary to what it may appear, I like to just have a laugh at something musical on occasion! > This made me think of when I was talking to Danny in > San Antonio about > how I have "Basia Moments" in local grocery stores > on the Muzak > system... but thankfully the songs are REALLY her > and NOT Muzak-ed. I didn't ever like hearing Basia on piped music, but these days I hear everything on piped music so I guess there's no reason to feel that way. I think it's from having defended her from the elevator music charge so often in mixed company. (and whoever I'm with will tease me to this day!) but once in a while, it's okay. I'll be in line at Macy's in The City with like 15 people and their obnoxious kids while the cashier insists on making the stupidest one sign up for the charge card, and right before I blow my top the cosmic forces will see fit to placate me with "New Day For You" or something, performing a public service for all ;-) But I don't hate intercom music! When I was thinking about moving West, I was being chased by songs about San Francisco in every public space I went to. Seriously. The final straw was hearing "Lights" by Journey while standing in line to buy ink cartridges so I could print my "book". Having actual musicians involved (Ben Folds, etc) helped I think. His cover of "Common People" is awesome! Some songs are strikingly serious and emotional. Lots of looking-back-on-life-at-the end -type of stuff. I mean, he does a song about his wife's drowning death. Balls freaking out! He's still a putz, but it was a decent album. Not one I would listen to in one sitting, but not The Transformed Man either (whew) Oh, and I don't want anyone to think I hate covers! I don't if they are done well. That's not something exclusive to that show. Many times actors become successful because of their current role. They get big ideas and leave the show they're on to pursue bigger things, thinking they're going to be mega stars. Sometimes they're right, but often times they're not. The first example that comes to mind is David Caruso. He was hot stuff on NYPD Blue, and he left to go into movies. He did a couple of snoozers and discovered he wasn't the big star he thought he was. On the other side, sort of, is Noah Wyle. He's been on ER since the beginning. A lot of actors have come and gone from that show, but he's been there the whole time. He finally left at the end of this last season and I'll miss him. He's done some other work, big screen movies and TV movies, and I'm sure he'll get plenty of work. He may not be the next George Clooney, but he'll do much better than someone like David Caruso. He doesn't think he's God's gift to acting. Anyway, just my little soapbox moment. It's over now. ;) Barry "Do not go where the path may lead.
