Other than sheer talent good microphones help. I had a great trip and it is true that the welsh do not like the English very much (ha ha). We were up north in Abersoch for a week and then down south to Bridge End to fly the Bylwch and the Wrecher, a world class slope soaring site, anyway England is a beautiful place. My pal Paul lives in Berkshire near Reading which is about 5 miles or so from High Wycome ("wick"like the candle) because on an old listing once said that MB was hanging out recording this CD there. So we drove over there several times running errands Paul had to do. But NO MB of course, they are near where I live geographically (the Midwest) on tour. But it was fun to say I'd been there. And of course this Sunday is their Denver Concert, Yipee, except it is snowing like hell in the general area right now, I hope they do not get stuck in a drift of snow. Or me and Kelly get stuck. Looking forward to the show and the Rocky Mountains Tom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 11:24:20 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: Lyrics You know, I just figured out that "London Warsaw New York" is mentioned in the lyrics to "Copernicus" on the LWNY CD. I have seen waterspouts, earthquakes, hurricanes, and blizzards and I have not seen anything that compares to the twisters they get in the midwest. They are totally terrifying. I suppose that any of them can be just as bad if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, but twisters are No.1 on my list. In hindsight, I am very glad that Basia's humility didn't overcome her drive to be able to give more musically. I know that hindsight is 20/20, but it does seem a real shame to have her be merely a backup singer with no songwriting credits. I can't help but wonder how much Danny's influence caused her to make that break; whether he had to convince her of her ability to make it on her own, etc. And golly, all 3 of them look like kids!! Those &$^%&.... out of curiousity, since they have a licensing area, I checked out their price to simply put it on BasiaWeb-- they want more to do something like that, than most people get for writing the articles in the first place-- it would be as much as it would cost for a big magazine or paper to reprint it. Blimey! REALLY grinds me-- I understand being frustrated by being copied (I see stuff from my site copied ALL THE TIME!) but seeing that I could copy it from the paper if I lived near the library, that is bollocks to charge that kind of money. I did solve the problem with the front page linking to it, and in time might post it there, but man... Grrrr! Leslie O. Tired of spam? Yahoo! I'm surprised none of the DFW people on this list (There used to be many, I thought.) have reviewed the Ft. Worth concert last night... Guess it's up to me. ;-) A preface: Several years ago, I actively participated in this list. (I was Brian Cundieff back then, but that's a long story.) I rejoined recently and have been lurking silently for the last several months. I wish I could say that I've read all of your posts, but between marriage, school, work, a new home business, and the monster bookcases I'm building, I pretty much only take the time to read the posts with subject lines not beginning with "Re:" That said, it has been great to see the list reinvigorated by our Basia's return to the limelight. About the concert: Maybe I'm not as hard-core as I used to be. I still haven't bought Matt's Mood. I had decided that even if Basia came to Dallas on the new tour, I would pass. My wife has been supporting us while I go back to school full-time. We have also had a lot of expenses related to our new wedding photography business. If I told her about the tour, she would have insisted that we go, because she knows how much I love Basia. So I just kept quiet. The other day, she showed me the ad for the show in one of our local papers and said, "Did you know about this?" Just one of the reasons I love my wife so much. Ft. Worth's Bass Hall is a venue several orders of magnitude nicer than the Coca-Cola Starplex, where I last saw Basia, about ten years ago. We got the nosebleed seats to save a little money, but at least we would be there. I'm not a dress-up kind of guy, but for Basia at Bass Hall, I put on my suit and tie and my wife the little black dress and silk shawl. (An event like this may never come around again, eh?) There was a nice surprise. When we arrived at the hall, we were told that the house wasn't full, so we could sit downstairs in the orchestra section if we'd like. If we'd like?! We ended up about 15 rows from the stage. That was great for us, but I felt bad for Basia and the guys that the show didn't sell out. I don't have time for a full review, just the highlights and some general observations. I had not heard the new album, so those songs were all totally new to my ears. All good stuff. "Never Say the Words(?)" was probably my immediate favorite. I was moved by "Ronnie's Samba." At the end, I could see the tears on Basia's cheeks and knew that Ronnie Ross must have been not just a member of the band, but a close friend, whose absence was deeply felt. Listening to Basia and Mark together, I found myself wondering what great music they would have been able to create together over the last twenty years if Basia and Danny had never left the band. On the other hand, if Basia had never gone solo, maybe we in the 'States would never have heard of Matt Bianco. But I digress... The older material was--of course--the best part of the show. I would have liked more, but she sang several of my favorites: "Half a Minute," "Promises," "An Olive Tree." The audience leapt to their feet for "Time and Tide." Basia hasn't recorded or toured for several years, but she has obviously kept her voice in good shape. When she hit that note in "Time and Tide"--you know the one I'm talking about--it was like going back in time to 1990, when I first heard her sing that song live. The encore piece was "New Day for You." When I was a radio DJ in 1991, I always ended my show with that song. After the concert, the lights came up again. As we stood up to leave, my wife turned to me and exclaimed, "She's has an amazing voice!" I know! And now my wife knows, too. We bought a "postergram," which I thought was a less convenient collectible than the tour books sold at previous shows, and went out to the tour bus, hoping for an opportunity to get autographs and photos. The other band members came out earlier and the drummer even hung around to chat with fans. Of course, when Basia and Danny finally emerged from the back door of the theatre, all attention turned to them. She must have had this experience many times over the years, but she still seemed to be genuinely surprised that our little crowd was still waiting for her after nearly an hour. I'm going to gush a little bit, so excuse me. Meeting Basia in person is something I never thought I would get to do. (Although apparently, she took time to meet fans after the 1994 show at the Starplex.) I had hoped that she would simply give us a moment to sign my "Sweetest Illusion" CD and the postergram and take a quick snapshot, but she actually talked to everyone, gave hugs, shook hands. It was wonderful. We met Danny, too, and briefly discussed the possibility that I could work as his stunt double, due to our similar hairstyles. He was really very friendly and I was glad that we got to meet him. A few words about Mark Reilly... As I said before, I have not read the bulk of posts here, but I gathered that many unkind things have been said about Mark. I'm not addressing anyone in particular, but I get the feeling sometimes that some people feel the need to express their love for a favorite artist by putting another down. Personally, I find the criticisms of Mark's performance to be unjustified, based on what I saw last night. I liked his voice, though my wife observed that he tended to mumble. I give him credit for obviously understanding that 95% of the people in the audience were there mainly to see Basia. Most of the time, he let her have the spotlight and give us what we came to see. Let's not forget that (at least if I understand right) we owe Mark some of the credit for getting Basia back in the studio and on our stages again. And let me just say that, speaking as a man who has only one dance step, I really appreciate Mark for getting up on stage with his one dance step. ^_- I really only have one complaint. After Danny signed our postergram, I asked him if Mark would be coming out. My wife and I wanted to meet him also and thank him for the music. Danny answered, "I think he's already left." We were disappointed, but I wondered if he's been getting the cold shoulder at other shows. That would be a shame. Someone here said that Danny reads this list sometimes. While I don't expect that he has read my long, rambling post, I hope that he's passing on to Mark some of our more positive comments about him. So it was a great show. I took some pictures on the sly during the concert, but it was a borrowed camera and I was trying to be discreet, so I don't think they turned out too well. However, in the next few days, I will post the after-show pictures on my website. Cheers! - -Brian* P.S.- Leslie, thanks for updating basiaweb! Tired of spam? Yahoo!
