I'll do a quick summary as I am about to hit the road for the rest of the week. I finally had a chance to meet Thelma and Lonnie as we carpooled to Atlanta. We got there early so we could be sure to get in the front of line to get good seats. While we were waiting, we ambled around to the back and kept an eye out for personalities. We saw Mark and Danny come out and got Danny's attention. Danny comes across in person just like the interviews - a very warm and classy personality. Mark and Danny were kind enough to pose for photos. Eventually, Basia arrived and we had a chance to say hello and get a few photos!!! She was very kind to spend a minute with us and is very charming and beautiful in person. In the end, waiting in line for several hours paid off because we ended up right up front! The opener was Enaldo Queiroz, a Latin-jazz style solo guitarist. http://tinyurl.com/9q4af This was his first major gig back after damaging one of his hands in an accident. It was easy to be swept away with his music. Then Basia came on, demurely dismissed the applause, and the show started. I thought Basia and the band were right on target and hit every song from the start. I thought the band as a whole and the Matt Bianco numbers were very good and stood out as a great band on their own. I "discovered" Basia after the previous tours ended so I never had a chance to see her in person. If you can hear the feelings expressed in her music and lyrics on CD, there is nothing like seeing the extraordinary vocals flow out in person in front of you. After the concert, Basia graciously signed autographs later out back until urged off by her manager. We had a chance to hang out with Kevin Robinson for a few minutes and had a very fascinating chat. If you have a chance to see Basia/Matt Bianco on tour, DO NOT MISS IT!!! It was great to meet Joe (the lurker here, not recent poster!!), Tara, Nate, Steve, etc. who are very interesting fans. I've only hit on the high points, but I've got to run. Here's a few more off topic random memories I'll associate with this day (Don't ask!) - "Hey security, what's the guy in the white shirt doing behind the cones?" - Speaking Korean - "Are you Thelma?" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 11:36:40 EDT From: PParm16424@aol.com Subject: Re: Ebay alert The audio part is fine. At the part when it modulates up, AND she goes for an ever higher note, the crowd LEPT TO ITS FEET IN A STANDING OVATION. I'm telling you, folks, I was in the back row of the balcony in the back of the theater, I could see EVERYONE, and EVERYONE was standing in applause. DURING THE SONG! I think that's the first time I've seen someone get a standing ovation while the song is still going. It also seemed as if it coincided with the moment in the TandT video when she transitions from the rehearsal scene to the concert scene. But the Standing O isn't in the video, is it? Anyway - regardless - it was well deserved, she was outstanding. - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 13:01:30 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: Mark OK, on the Mark thing - after last night, I have to say - I love the entire Matt Bianco package, Mark and all. Sure, he's no Frank Sinatra. But I don't think I'd want to see a Harry Connick type in this group. The MB mix is a combination that works well. And equally important - perhaps more so - I get the sense that there's an emotional element present that's valuable to Basia. She introduced him as "my friend" at the beginning, and just as she did that, all the back-and-forth about him in this list for the past few weeks seemed totally irrelevant and meaningless. And that aside - artistically speaking, there's a real-world quality to his contribution that works better live than I would've thought. He's hits the notes and doesn't screw up, and his voice in the mix gives a solid male component that works and lets Basia shine. I like the results. So - there's my two bits. I vote he stays. Not that my vote matters. But I really like the overall mix. Before last night, I would've abstained. After last night, I'm a solid "yes" on Mark. - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 13:01:31 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: Pre-recorded stuff OK, folks, on the pre-recorded issue - I'm a former professional musician, my rock band in college helped pay my tuition and even had some singles on local radio in DC. I DJ'ed for a few years, and have run sound for some pros, including a dear friend who performs regularly in Atlantic City and NYC. I have a number of close and dear friends in the "business". On the other hand, I don't claim to be an expert. On the third hand (!), I'm always the first to spot the lip-syncher on TV or in shows. Having said all of that - whatever pre-recorded tracks may have been incorporated last night had to be minimal. I'm guessing some backgrounds may have been reinforced with tracks, but at the same time - I think they're strong enough to have been all natural. Great show! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 13:01:32 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: The Best Part of Last Night The BEST part of the Atlanta show last night was after. I went out to the parking lot and found the crowd near the tour bus and the stage door. And just chatting with people at random, I found a guy who said he was from South Carolina - and that turned out to be Mark Nice from the list. I asked if Thelma were there, and sure enough - there she was! WITH HER BASIA@SMOE.ORG SHIRT ON! SO COOL! AND - with the GREATEST photos of herself with Basia taken before the show. She and Lonnie and Mike told me stories that I'll let her tell, but suffice it to say, it was so much fun to find them in the crowd last night - along with many others from our list, and from the MB list, it was all absolutely fantastic. You know - we really do have a great group of fun, nice, excellent folks, and I was never happier or more proud to be associated with such a thoughtful and considerate group than I was last night. OK, more gushing later - - - Steve P.S. Danny and Basia known Thelma by name and by sight now. P.P.S. Leslie - Danny definitely knows ALL about your work. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 13:07:39 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: RE: Half a Minute Fav / Standing O in T and T > the crowd LEPT TO ITS FEET IN A STANDING OVATION I meant the crowd LEAPT. I don't think Mark has any illusions of grandeur. I think he knows his place, and from what I saw at the Detroit show, he was perfectly content to let or even make Basia shine. That endeared him to me right there. Basia doesn't to "compete" with Mark's voice. And besides, any friend of Basia's.... Finally purchased a copy of WSAYO from eBay tonight. I said I was going to get Clear Horizons next, but decided to go back to the scene of the crime first. I really didn't like being unfamiliar with those songs during the concert. I've been listening to Matt's Mood steadily to/from work since I bought it 2 weeks ago. Not being familiar with MB, I was pleasantly suprised how the vocal combination works for me. I must admit that at first I felt there wasn't enough Basia on this CD, (not enough Danny as well) but I have become attached to all 10 cuts. I wouldn't change anything about this disc; it sounds exactly how I imagine a Matt Bianco CD should sound. The excitement is building!!! Only 8 days till San Antonio. Speaking of which, I managed to find a motel just about a quarter-mile from the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, so I can easily walk to the show (in 13 days) and have a couple of cold ones without having to worry about driving back. Not too many, though. Have to keep my wits about me in case Mark, Danny, and Basia meet with the fans after the show. Wonder if they will have Black Lager?
