WOW! What a night! The venue certainly was small and intimate. Basia said she liked it that way. "They" (the promoters, perhaps?) wanted them to cancel the concert, but they said, "NO WAY!". I am SO glad they didn't. After running into construction, and a bit of confusion about directions after getting off I-75, I managed to arrive just after 6. I spotted a hamburger joint on the next corner, but after parking the car, I walked up to it, but it was closed! A sit-down restaurant was almost next door to it, but no time for that. I went back to my car and ate as much of the "goodies" (I have to carry some with me EVERYWHERE I go!) as I could, and made it inside JUST before the 6:30 starting time. As I suspected, there was general admission with the venue change. I sat down in the fourth row, grumbling a bit to myself for nearly 30 minutes. Just about 7:00, I went for a last minute pit stop and a few bites of a protein bar. I came back to find the house dark, and Basia and crew just finishing Slip & Sliding. (What happened to the opening act? Perhaps they dropped with the change???) BUT, I found there were a few front seats still available, so sat down about 8 feet from Danny, with Basia standing in front of him. WELL, Basia pointed at me 3 times (only one she did that to) as I was singing and clapping along with her on the Matt's Mood songs. Obviously, she was surprised that anyone knew those that well. That really made my night. My hands are a bit sore from clapping along with the majority of songs. (Too bad it isn't kosher to bring a tambourine to a concert. That would have been fun!) If you asked her that about the guy in the black spandex shirt, black leather pants, and dangle cross earrings, she would definitely remember me. :) The crowd spared no love for the group, especially Ms. T. A couple of times Mark got the crowd going again for Basia after they had just done so for her. She pretended to strangle his neck the last time. I got to thinking: Could this possibly be Mark's contribution to the world of music? I believe it was Steve who was telling how Basia hates to have the limelight to herself. Could he be doing this (in part) to get Basia back into her own limelight? (in time?) He was so willing to stand there through many of her songs and just "boogie" to the music. That was really "big" of him to do that, knowing the popularity that she already has. I am glad to "meet" Kevin, though I only observed him throughout the concert. If my natural good judge of character is working properly, I would say that I give Kevin my "approval". (Like it has anything to do with me!!) Just one more silly thought that went through my brain. OH, I have to tell you this: As they started the second song, my mind told me that they were singing to a "back up" tape. But then I looked, and all the back-up singers were singing and all the musicians were musicing (?). It just sounded SO tight that I was convinced for a moment that it could not have possibly been live. (But it sure was!) They sounded THAT great. OK, this is long enough. Had a super time. Loved getting to see Basia in the flesh. And she really did seemed overwhelmed by the responses. There was no shortage of excitement in the house, that is for sure. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Apr 2005 09:28:27 -0500 From: "Barry" Subject: RE: sizing up the band > Tom 5'-10", 43 > Amy, 5' 3", 42 (but can pass for 35) > > Steve, 5' 8", 43, acts like he's 10 > Max 6'4" 215# 53 years on this planet Barry 6'6", 260, 35 (but can pass for late 20s......sometimes younger, since I STILL get carded now and then when buying alcohol) "Do not go where the path may lead. It's a really wickedly funny show about renegade web designers and counterculture magazine writers. In the last episode of the series, there's a scene in a coffee shop that has "Whose Side Are You On?" playing clearly in the background. It's really effective use of the music. I had seen Basia twice previously, once at the Universal Amphitheater and once at the Greek. The opening act, O'2L (pronounced "soul-crushingly bland"), were on time and seemed like nice enough folk. Jane Mangini is cute. However, they are in the large grouping of smooth jazz/fusion/whatever, a genre I see as being populated by extremely talented musicians united behind the goal of producing music that is a better sleeping aid than a fistful of Ambien chased with a fifth of Wild Turkey. I've already expressed my lukewarm feelings toward Matt Bianco. Seeing them live was better than listening to the CD, not surprisingly. I even warmed up to a couple of the songs, and my wife loved many of them (she's a bigger samba fan than I am). The band was air tight, as I expected. Basia's sister does indeed look like she's nearly in pain. My wife hadn't heard anything about the previous shows and at one point she leaned over and said, "Basia's sister does not look like she's having a good time." We now come to the obligatory (for me) Marc Reilly bashing segment of this post. His stage presence can be best described as Mini-Me Bruce Willis but with less musical talent, and the dance moves of Ed Grimly. My wife disagrees. She believes he looks like what would happen should John Malkovic decide to dance. Should the band ever need to replace him on short notice, they may think of the following: *An electric razor magically given the power of speech. *Ned from South Park. *A stoner talking through a kazoo. Ok, enough negativity. Basia was brilliant. I've never seen her sing with more confidence and technical virtuosity. The same warmth and humility was present in full force, and it's difficult to imagine a singer who appears to be more into and in love with what she's doing. She killed Time and Tide and got a standing ovation, which prompted her to turn her back on the audience in embarassment, eventually even walking just off stage as she appeared to be in tears. Great show, brought down only a bit by less than stellar sound and material that is inferior to her solo stuff. But I'm thrilled I went and we had a great time. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! There's a college station that plays some jazz, but it's on the low end of the dial and not always easy to get. There's a station that plays some big band stuff, and music from the Rat Pack, etc. But the best music is gone. So there will probably be no chance of a Matt Bianco stop in St. Louis. This is just another of many reasons why I will be so glad to get out of here when my wife's out of school next year. I can still listen to it online, they're still (for some reason) streaming live online. Not sure how that's going to work, I plan to listen soon to find out. It will be satellite radio in the car, or CDs, but I don't think it will improve the chances of good jazz artists stopping here if their music isn't being played locally.
