So know what you mean (I am too) If it is inside the Hockeytown Cafe, there is a restaurant right there. I am way out of the loop and haven't been there since that opened. I believe there are a couple other spots in that immediate area. Just be careful to only stick around that area of the theatres and the ballpark, if you go out of it you hit some dicey turf. - --Leslie O. - --- PParm16424@aol.com wrote: > > Hey Leslie, > > What restaurants are there near the City Theatre or > have you been "out of the > loop" too long? However I can only give it a B-. I'm very happy that Basia is back, and that is the most important thing. But in listening to this several times, I kept thinking, this is it? I wanted and expected more. This is a light and pleasant CD. It will be perfect to be playing this spring and summer while sitting on the porch reading the Sunday paper. It certainly showcases their samba rhythms, and hopefully will bring the fans back. Ordinary Day will certainly get a lot of airplay on jazz and adult contemporary stations. It has "pop hit" written all over it. There's even a flute solo - - way cool! I also really liked Golden Days, a real upbeat tune, and Ronnie's Samba, a song that just makes you feel like summer. La Luna has a cool sleazy beat to it. The musicians were very good on this CD. While I have never been a big fan of his solo work, Peter White fits in perfectly here. He seems to make others' music better with his playing. Kevin Robinson, unfortunately, isn't heard from enough, as he is also a top-flight musician. I think the most amazing playing was the baritone sax of Ronnie Ross. I could listen to that all day long. Danny's piano is very good, but he too is underutilized. I didn't hear any Olive Trees on this CD, where a bunch of terrific musicians get to play their butts off. When Basia was originally with Matt Bianco, she left because she didn't want to be "just" the backup vocalist. Obviously she has proved she has amazing talent. I wish I could say the same for Mark Reilly. I admit I don't know much else of his work, besides Whose Side Are You On. But this guy can't sing any better than any lounge singer. He brings next to nothing to this CD. My big question is why would Basia lower herself so much by recording with this guy? Is this how you rescue a stalled career? I was hoping to hear some songs where they were "equals", but that hardly happened, except maybe on Golden Days. Nothing against Mark personally, but how has he survived in this business for so long? I'd also love to know who wrote what songs, as the credits were vague. I can take an educated guess, comparing to her earlier songs, that Basia was the main writer for Ordinary Day and Say The Words. Someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Who was the main contributer to Wrong Side Of The Street and Slip & Sliding? Those two songs were a waste, and should have been left off. I believe it was Leslie that used the phrase "emotional content" in describing songs. There wasn't much of that in this CD, certainly no Yearning or Time And Tide. I'll certainly listen to this CD again, and look forward to the show next weekend, but it doesn't compare to Basia's earlier work. Hopefully she'll use this as a way to return to the music world, and do better on the next one. Hopefully that won't be another 10 years. Basia seems to not want to be in the spotlight, as the latest interviews with her suggest. She feels more, I hate to say secure but thats the only word I can think of, in a group setting, I think. It sounds as if she never really liked having all the eyes on her. > I'd also love to know who wrote what songs, as the > credits were vague. I got to ask Basia this on the radio, sort of, by email anyway. She wrote the lyrics for Ordinary Day, the Polish part on Wrong Side, La Luna, Say The Words, Slip and Sliding, and Ronnie's Samba. I really need to get that transcribed, just haven't found the time. Off to APE! - --LO __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I remember seeing her at Merriweather Post Pavillion in the DC Metro area years ago, probably the TSI tour, and honestly, she seemed genuinely shocked at each and every set of enthusiastic applause that followed her songs. She would seem stunned and thrown off by it, and make comments like "I can't believe it", or "you're much too kind", "you are too much, really, I had no idea", and on and on. I remember once after a particularly lengthy ovation, with the front row at their feet, it eventually slowly began to subside, the band kept looking for Basia for then next cue, and she just ... stood there, with something of a surprised, lost look on her face. In silence. Staring at the audience, looking all around. I remember that moment, that was when I thought "wow, this is no act, she really IS surprised how much we're so crazy about her." And then eventually, she said something like "wow, I don't know what to say." So I think she just doesn't get it. Tens of thousands of screaming fans on their feet and I think she still simply refused to accept it. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-basia@smoe.org [mailto:owner-basia@smoe.org]On Behalf Of > Leslie Osborn > Sent: Saturday, April 09, 2005 2:01 PM > To: basia@smoe.org > Subject: Re: CD Review > > > > > Kevin Robinson, > > unfortunately, isn't heard > > from enough, > > Admittedly, I have to agree there. Most of his parts > are looped. ;-( > > > My big > > question is why would Basia lower herself so much by > > recording with this guy? > > Is this how you rescue a stalled career? > > Basia seems to not want to be in the spotlight, as the > latest interviews with her suggest.
