[Leslie Osborn ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 06 Apr 2005 03:52:44 -0500 From: Max Wellhouse Subject: WOW!!!!!! Basia IS Back!! Before I drop over dead in front of the terminal here, let me say that moving the show to the smaller theatre was a wonderful idea. The Pantages is as gorgeous as any old RKO Orpheum I've seen, and it had a stunning stained glass skylight that was painted over and the resto crew almost destroyed it back in 1999 when it was salvaged literally at the last minute. Officially, the show sold 750 tickets and the balcony appeared pretty full and there were very few seats on the main floor open. The local smooth jazz station KJZI must've gotten the word out. A word about the opening act O'2L(pronounced "O-tool"(but you knew that); they were a perfect match to open for MB/Basia. Basically a hubby/wife, guitar/keyboard team with another keyboard, drums and bass. Very tight and the guy's wife really tears up the electronic keyboard. I wouldn't dare insult them by labeling their music, but it's really fine. I've never heard anyone cover the old Door's tune"Rider's on the Storm", but they did an instrumental that was awesome. My only complaint was the bass player''s amp needed to be toned down as it overpowered a lot of the time. This was not the case with the main attraction. Most of the other 5 or so tunes must've come from their new CD, which I don't remember the name of. I belive the guitar guy said they'd never played before an audience before as that group and were in hog heaven(my words) to be asked to open for B/MB. You can tell a fledgling group when after their 30 or so minute set, they were taking their own equipment off the stage. Concert started right on time at 8 and Basia and MB were out there by 9. Remember, this is my first time to see her or MB, but man, she hasn't aged a bit in 10 years(or al least since the Clear Horizon photo was taken!). Several times throughout the show that lasted about 1:45, she was brushing back tears; tears of appreciation and affirmation, I would guess. The audience was really giving her what she needed and I'll bet she's still pinching herself to make sure this is really happening. I know I was! I believe Mark Reilly said he'd never performed in America before either. The backup band did have Kevin R.( I recognized him from the music videos), and maybe 2 of the 3 backup singers were the same, but I thought I heard Basia say her sister was singing in the middle of the trio. Maybe someone can confirm this. The sax/flute player had won some sort of British musician of the year award a year or two ago and he was not only breaking female hearts, but dazzling all with his music. His name was Bob something..... That A-flat Baritone Sax was a might powerful!! Drummer and percussion were caged in plexiglass maybe due to the cramped nature of the smaller stage. Danny was super, the bass player as wonderful and Tim Canfield did an admirable job filling Peter's shoes. This show showed no signs of first-night jitters or mistakes. I saw one spot that didn't come on Basia on time, but who cared? I think she might have missed one high note on "Olive Tree", but again, nobody booed!! The band did a few numbers from old and current CD before they broke into Cruisin for Bruisin. During Matt's Mood, Basia and Mark got their break(no intermission) and on one song later in the set, Kevin and Bob were cutting up on the stage to the point that Kevin was shaking a half-full bottled water container like that cylindrical percussion instrument that I don't know the name of(call it the BB shaker, I guess). Then he looked at it funny like it wasn't making the right sound, and then polished off it's contents. I was sitting front row off to the left side slightly. Those of you with tickets on the left side will be pleased that Basia is on the left side of the stage. Everybody was visible and although I was only about 10 feet away from the bass speaker cabinet, I was only about 30 feet away from the divine Ms. B. I was concerned that the pro-Basia audience might not cheer as loud for the old or current MB tunes, but if there was a perceptible difference, it was wiped out by the end of the night. Mark took a break while Basia did a couple of songs, but they shared the stage together magnificently. The whole band was tight the only glitch I noticed was that the back up singers were a little faint, but remember, I was right in front of a large woofer enclosure!. Dressed simply in a silk top, scarf, black pants, and heels, she was so at-home up there, it's hard to describe. The Basia standards performed were Cruisin, Olive Tree, Promises, Time and Tide, and New Day for You. The encore tunes were Don't Blame it On that Girl and Half a Minute. The old MB stuff included Yeh Yeh, Who's side are you On?, Get out of Your Lazy Bed, and maybe a couple I'm not as familiar with. I thought Mark performed really well, but I only bought Matt's Mood at the show, so I can't comment on the studio stuff. I'll think of more stuff later, but Chicago, bolt down those theatre seats, because they will be dancin' and rockin' tonight. Enjoy this tour and hope it is the first of many more to come in whatever configuration. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Apr 2005 08:01:46 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: RE: WOW!!!!!! They also were on Jazz Trax and you guys should check it out if you want to know more about them. they are tres cool. And very unpretentious-- they sounded a bit dumbfounded at their new success. I really really really hope they continue on out here so I can see them. > main attraction. Most of the other 5 or so tunes > must've come from their > new CD, which I don't remember the name of. After all she's been through I'm so glad she is feeling the love from the audience. It almost seemed like when this MB thing began that she wasn't so sure. It's the cover story to Smooth Jazz News and they talk to Basia a bit, but what I thought was really cool (to US folk) was how they explained a lot of things. Both the writers have always been supporters and they obviously have been fans, and I think they do well, though the cover design gives me nightmares. ;-) (there's a print version of this mag as well) http://www.basiaweb.com for those who don't know. :-) - --Leslie O. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
