["Desianto F. W." Subject: Off Topic: Latest News (Re: Desianto OK?) Hello all, Glad to know that Basia and Matt Bainco finally do their tour. For those who plan to come to the concert/tour, I hope you can prepare well and enjoy the show. OK, now to the latest news of the earthquake. Until now, the victims in Indonesia are 79,940 and the number is still increasing. Volunteers all around the world have come and helped. They do the rescue as soon as they land in Aceh and North Sumatra. I have to admit that I respect their efforts and willingness to come to help people in needs. Sadly, a few of local people who weren't "touched" by the disaster - it means, they are not the victims - showed a graceless action. They begin to steal things and some of them ask for money if they are asked to help the volunteers. Of course, true or not, their action will disgrace the name of Indonesia though it was done by only a few. Shame on them. I think, they never learn to respect others. About the height of the wave, I have watched the amateur video that caught the last moments before the tsunami stroke. It was started by a 3-4 minutes earthquake at the Sumatran fault next to island of Simeule. Then, no more than 10 minutes, the tsunami came. It traveled at the speed of about 750 km/h (468 mph). The distance between the epicentre to the nearest coast is about 120 - 150 km (75 - 93 miles). After watching the video, I think it's true that the height of the wave is about 10 meters (30 feet). A lot of houses and lives are gone in minutes. The witness also said that the wave came at least three times so the damage is unthinkable. BTW, how about our friend in India? Do you remember that we have a member from India? Is he safe? Czesc, Desianto F. W. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I'm relieved to read that you were not directly affected by the tsunami. However, my prayers and deepest sympathy go to you, the citizens of your country, and to people of the other 11 nations for the awful loss of life. I'm certain it is more terrible that I can possibly imagine. Know that this disaster is dominating the news here in America and many Americans, along with people around the world, are donating money to be rushed to help the survivors. I wish I could be right there helping people directly, but since I live so far way, I must find some other way to help. Perhaps one thing that people on the Internet can do is to relay messages from survivors in the hope that they will be reunited with other surviving family members, or at least express their immediate needs in addition to food and water. I urge everyone, if they have not already done so, contact charities helping in the relief effort and make a donation. For those with credit cards, you can contact most charities on the Internet and make a donation this moment! Do not procrasinate because five million people are in danger of dying of thirst, hunger, and disease if help does not arrive soon. In brotherhood, Fred ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V10 #1 **************************
