Yes, you're damn right I am. I GOT DRAFTED for the Viet Nam war. I served my time and, thank god, am still in one piece. This is a fucking music forum - not a political forum. To use this as a place to impose your political preferences on us is RUDE in the extreme. If you can't stick to the forum topic, please keep your opinions and drivel to yourself. I know it's difficult, but try to have a little respect for the people that are here to discuss Basia's music. There's thousands of political forums on the internet. Find the right one for your message. If this continues, I will pick up the phone and call Jeff Wasilko. He runs the server that this forum is on. My last discussion with him was about people getting off topic and the possible need for a moderator. You are making a compelling case for one. Think about it and don't ruin it for everyone. Stick with the topic. We all have enough spam in our lives and political spam is amongst the most annoying. The fact that you apologized in advance says that you knew you were being offensive to start with. That does not make it any more acceptable. Just don't do it. - -- Bill - -------------- Original message -------------- > > Yeah, let's present it to him after we give him his two weeks notice on 11/2. > > DM&FS > > At 05:52 PM 10/25/2004, Barry wrote: > > >http://www.noiraqdraft.com/impact.php?uid=55c3289101303b680bc8a915a140b2c3 > > > >Even if you don't live in the US, you can go here to sign a petition to voice > >your protest to the idea of a draft. I'd respect your right to an opinion if you were mature enough to refrain from using such vile language. I'm sure you'll have something to say about that too, but I'll be the adult and end my discussion on this topic here. > If you can't stick to the forum topic, please keep your opinions and drivel to yourself. > Stick with the topic. You might have noticed the letters "OT" in the subject line. It stands for "Off Topic", and it lets people know that the post does not refer to the general topic of the list. It is used so that people who do not care about reading anything not directly related to said topic can delete the post without wasting their precious time. Call Mr. Wasilko. If my comment was so unappreciated by him, or by so many people that he feels compelled to action, then I'd rather not be a part of the group anyway. I posted this on a few lists, none of them political forums. Although I did get some responses that were not in agreement with my views, I haven't received any replies that were so vile and rude. > The fact that you apologized in advance says that you knew you were being offensive to start with. That does not make it any more acceptable. No, it says that I anticipated a few people going off the deep end because they're in such disagreement with my views that they'd be unable to refrain from attacking me for my views. I knew that not everyone would feel the same, but that many would. It's interesting to note that quite a few people have signed it as a direct result of my emails. In fact, the number of people who have signed it because of me has quadrupled. So I'd say that at least a few people out there don't find it the least bit offensive. Maybe none of those people came from this list. That's a possibility. I'm certainly not asking people to come forward and say "I signed it." I'm just saying that some people were glad to see it and believe in the cause too. As I already said, I'm not going to post on the topic again. As you said, this isn't the place for it. I posted my intended message and have replied to the attack against me. Now it is time for me to move on. I know the story about S89 and HR163. I know that a draft isn't currently an imminent threat. That doesn't mean it won't ever happen. Enlistment numbers are down. Forces are already spread thin. Should there be another attack on US soil, or should things get worse in Iraq (or overseas in general for that matter), the government might have no choice. There have already been rumors and talks of an Iraqi civil war. If that happens and we get involved, we repeat history and here comes another draft. By signing this petition, it's saying we don't want things to get to the point that a draft is needed. We're saying get out now, we've already stuck our nose in someone else's business, where it didn't belong in the first place, and it's time to leave. Many people, Republican and Democrat alike, know and have said that Bush was wrong to go into Iraq after 9/11. Tick them off enough and they (or the real attackers) will come after us with a vengeance. If we get out now, hopefully we won't have to worry about a draft, at least for a while. But if things keep going the way they are now, those bills could come out of committee and become a reality very quickly. I don't want to see that happen, so I'm taking a proactive stance. If it's a mistake, we learn from it. We being those who believe in it and have signed the petition. It's better than sitting back and taking no action at all. Listen very carefully: I was on Bobby Caldwell's website for a long time, and one day the forum was pulled. I met a lot of nice folks there, but suddenly the forum went away. A comment from the webmaster in an email was that the forum was considered "an embarassment" to Mr. Caldwell by his management. Why, we don't know, nobody made any remarks like the ones here, we were chatting away and enjoying it. Mostly about his limited concert appearances, but sometimes about other stuff too. But now it's gone. While I realize this is a privately run forum, we do NOT want to run afoul of any rules or run the risk of embarassing ourselves, Basia, or anyone else. So please, knock it off. Literally brought to tears. Most of the bands that have influenced my life I heard on Peely's show. To name a few, The Fall, The Jam, The Clash, Joy Division/New Order, The Slits, Bill Nelson. A very very sad loss indeed. I know that Basia/MB were probably not amongst his favourites but his influence on the music business has crossed over to most bands of the last 3 decades.
