Your present to us has been years of the best music on the planet. I hope your special day is filled with fun, family, laughter, lots of presents, love, and special memories. W." Subject: Birthday and a little more.... Happy 50th Birthday, Basia! Well all, she is 50 today, she is back with MB and hopefully, she will go on tours with MB soon. Of course, we're still waiting for her solo albums. When? Let's hope we don't have to wait so long. But of course, it's up to her... Speaking about concerts/tours, I remember her comments when (if I'm not wrong) she was in the USA, on The Sweetest Illusion tour. She said that she prefer staying in a modest but comfortable hotel to staying in a penthouse suite completed with swimming pool, excercising equipments, and other expensive/exclusive stuffs. She also said that she felt not so comfortable, sitting inside the luxurious limousine while at the same time she saw many people homeless along the way to and from the hotel where she's staying. If only she could choose, she would travel on an "ordinary" car rather than in a limo but what can she do. The label or concert promoter wanted her to take the limo. Knowing that, I remember the real story when Yngwe Malmstein made concerts in Indonesia. Most journalist know that he has an excellent taste of exotic cars sho they tried to find a sport car, a brand new Porsche, for a property in the photo session. When he was asked to stand next to the car, he said "No!" When they asked why, he answered, "I really don't like Porsche. It looks like a sack!" They tried to persuade him but he still said "No". A journalist from an automotive tabloid then took an edition of the tabloid that he brought and asked Yngwe to hold it in front of him and he would take some photos of him. Yngwe said, "Sure, no problem! I like this tabloid." On another tour, Yngwe made a concert in Surabaya. Everything went well until the time when he went to the airport. FYI, the distance from the hotel to the airport is quite far. It was mid day so the temperature and the traffic was awful. So, the promoter provided him a luxurious Mercedes-Benz limo in order to make him comfortable. But when he saw the limo, he said "No, thank you! I don't take the limo. I'd like to be in that car!" and his hand pointed to a late 1980's Toyota Kijang, a kind of minibus which is very popular in Indonesia. The promoter said, "But that car is quite old and not so comfortable. The A/C won't be cool enough for you." But Yngwe said, "I don't care! I like that car. I wanna be in that car!" So, nothing the promoter could do except to fulfill his wish. Imagine that! A superstar like Yngwe Malmstein refused a limo and wanted to be in the car with the same model as I drive, which was - at least - 20 to 25 times cheaper than the limo! As far as I know, not many artists would do that. Finally, if Basia would make concerts and if she felt "guilty" to be in the limo, I hope she could say, "No, thanks!" and she could choose the car suited to her heart. Well, enough from me. I'm sorry for this "rubbish". Czesc, Desianto F. W. ==================== BTW, if you're curious enough to know how a late 1980's Toyota Kijang looks alike, you can go to: http://www.peacemaking.com/indonesia/images/lombok.html That's the only picture of the late 1980's Kijang that I could find. It's a 1987 model, long chassis, 4-door, the wheels and the mirrors have been changed. Footsteps and fender guards were added because the standard model came out without any footsteps and fender guards. Mine is 1989 model, short, 5-door, pearl yellow, with 16 inches 10-spoke wheels and spoilers. BTW, 'kijang' means 'deer' and I named mine 'Blonde Deer' because of it's 'pearly-blondy' yellow color. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Subject: Re: Birthday and a little more.... That was pretty interesting about the cars, Desi. The link didn't work but I googled it, and the new ones actually seem pretty cool! I've always admired Basia's lack of pretension. She sounds like someone who knows what is important and what is just B.S, and she probably learned from experience. And she is so right: the 'star' crap is ephemeral. People love you one year and the next you are nothing to them. But staying true to what you are doing, being with those who truly matter--- THAT is where it's at. Not how cool you look in whatever car. :-D And as for the cars thing, I have so heard it, living in the same house as people who are so in debt just to drive a Porsche (him) and a Mercedes SUV (her). I much rather would have my humble but much beloved Saturn (a fairly plain American car, mine is an SL2 sedan) that I pay for myself! :-D - --Leslie _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Wow! Someone else who knows the word ephemeral! But it's not surprising that it is Leslie. I was at a Bible Study discussing a portion of Ecclesiastes where Solomon uses a word translated as vapor or meaningless, depending on translation. I suggested ephemeral was a more accurate word, and nobody else knew the word. I had to refer them to www.dictionary.com.
