After listening to the CD in my truck for 2-months, I put it away over the weekend and did a little radio research. We have a radio station that bills itself as the longest running top-40 station in the US (WAPE) but everything they're playing sounds like "artists" with a 4-note vocal range singing over two chords and a drum machine. The smooth jazz stations play stuff that sounds like a sequencer and a saxophone. Hip hop stations sound like harder edged versions of Top-40 with a more limited vocal range. Then there are six, or eight, sports talk stations. I'm afraid Matt's Mood is just too good for airplay in the US. Maybe Rush Limbaugh will use the Kevin-to-Basia solo crossfade in "Golden Days" as bumper music. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 11:41:16 -0400 From: John Flood Subject: Re: US source for 'Ordinary Day' single Hell, I'll probably buy the US version when the 'slow boat' gets here . I have the Netherlands version(s) from the Polish site. I have to finish my remodeling job before I can hook up the surround sound system I snuck in with the new kitchen appliance purcheses to get to hear the SACD version though. lol I think I'll start bugging SMOOTHJAZZ.COM about getting airplay. I think smooth jazz radio will pick up maybe OD, I Never Meant To and, maybe, just maybe, Say The Words. I'll bet that Art Good will play this on his show, and go into the deep tracks too. Program Manager Lily wrote back and made it sound like they wouldn't even consider it while it's still an import-only. Too bad, since they play quite a bit of Basia and a LOT of Peter White. Maybe we should all chip in and send them a copy of the CD! :) Steve R. > I wonder what radio would play Ordinary Day, or > anything from Matt's Mood. Hmmm. Not to defend radio types like that, but it does kinda make sense-- it's pretty aggravating to hear something and not be able to readily get it. Although-- if it weren't for some enterprising program directors in California getting Time and Tide on import and playing it, CBS may have never released it here, and none of us would be here having this conversation! Because remember, CBS thought that it was too European for this market at the time. Boy were they wrong! So XM should screw their courage to the sticking point and play the damn thing! :D - --Leslie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I never heard anything from SI on any smooth jazz stations (or anywhere else). Recent adds to my smooth jazz playlist - I have a continuous stream going which feeds a small FM transmitter in my house and is available via MS Media Player at work - include Ordinary Day, La Luna, Ronnie's Samba and Say The Words. Samba is a stretch, but I'm being sentimental, I guess. I need more of her on my air. The rest of her recordings on my playlist include Astrud, Baby You're Mine, Half A Minute (the MB version), Miles Away, Promises, Springtime Laughter and Waters Of March. She was once the darling of smooth jazz, but I think she moved in a different direction with Sweetest Illusion. The only tracks I heard by her on Music Choice or Sirius were Astrud, Promises and Miles Away. Sirius doesn't play her at all now. I'm not sure about Music Choice, and I don't listen to smoothjazz.com enough to know if they play any. Because being creative and expanding your horizons isn't rewarded commercially. And because she didn't make Time and Tide III, she was penalized. And that really sucks. Another vocalist shut out that was a big deal back in the day: Michael Franks. And really, the vocals that format plays are more in the pop vein now--like Mariah Carey and Phil Collins. Blimey. So the bunch from back in the day that didn't really fit but sorta kinda fit into smooth jazz are hosed. Most of the music I like is not played by radio and that is fine with me. Personally, I don't listen to radio and most people I know do not either, preferring to get their tunage through other means. - --Leslie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Subject: Leslie finds things I'll be putting this up on BasiaWeb in the new version, but I just got the issue of Record Mirror from Nov. 15, 1986. Okay, so did you know that Run For Cover was the first single, released well in advance of the album? Neither did I, but there was Basia in 1986 promoting it in Europe! Who knew! The tone is negative about the old Matt Bianco, a dig is made at Mark's writing, and she talks about her and Danny moving to Biggin Hill. And she talks about how no one seemed to understand that Poland listens to music too. But the thing is, she was definitely overly edited, it sounds like some entirely different person talking instead of Basia, so I am a bit hesitant to take anything in this as gospel. Part of me wonders how her English was, it sounds like the editor really filled in the words. But the photo is adorable. Things to look forward to on the upcoming new BasiaWeb! - --Leslie Tired of spam? Yahoo! Good question. Either they're getting a REALLY good deal on them somehow, they're sticking it to you on the shipping, or they're bootleg copies. They're probably on the up and up, but I don't know how they can sell them so cheap and make any money.
