I first heard Renee two weeks ago, as I was driving into Palm Springs from the Ontario airport. KWXY, the oldies station for the "oldies" (but the only station out there that plays any jazz, after you get out of KKJZ/KUOR range), played "On a Slow Boat to China," and the announcer was raving about this "new" voice, which is exceptional because they play very little new stuff. I was awestruck, too. You're right, when you listen to Renee, you don't concern yourself with her age. Her voice is very well trained, and she already has a distinctive style. As she matures, I also hope she selects more interesting producers, like Orem Keepnews, and keeps having fun. 1)This was an unfair question, too, because, in that Italian interview video, Basia mentions she hadn't sung much, for a while, until she moved to England and needed to find work. 2) You're right, again, it was unfair. Those of us who have high musical intelligences (read "7 Kinds of Smart", by Thomas Armstrong) can never forget a favorite melody or a favorite voice. It's veritably certain these Basia list members will never forget Basia's unique voice and inimitable style. I pray Renee does not become like Britney, Celine, or Barbra, and that she stays with music whether she keeps acting or not. I also pray that, like Basia, she maintains her musical integrity and keeps pleasantly surprising us with the quality and breadth of what she presents us. For those of you under 50 or not from the Midwest, the Fabulous Flippers were (technically still are) a major show band act out of Lawrence KS back in the 60's. I was fortunate enough to convince the ticket taker at the Iowa State University memorial Center in the fall of 1967 that I was of "college age" and my high school sweetie and I and several friends got in to see them. What a show!!. Not Basia type music, but anyone that likes the Blues Brothers type motif, would likely like the Flippers. They were re-assembled for the Kansas Governor's Ball a year or so ago, so they still exist. Given anything to be there to listen. Subject: Randomness Random musings I know only you guys would appreciate: 1) So I'm here reading email and Mr. O is watching the new Ghost in the Shell anime. What sounds like random foriegn language singing is going in in the main theme song, but when I peek at the subtitles, I'm like, wait a minute... it was in Polish! Mr. O is like, duh Leslie, it's composed by Yoko Kanno, she uses the Warsaw Philharmonic all the time. Okay. Apparently there are a whole slew of anime soundtracks that have something in Polish on it. Who knew? 2) Went spelunking for choons, and scored the utterly adorable Prime TIme TV 12" (I also scored the new Swing Out Sister, yay!). This was one of the pre-album-release singles in the UK that look nothing like anything else. Anyway, the cutest pic of Ms. T. ever, saved from record bin oblivion by moi. Oh, and Windows Media Player is difficult to crack. Mr. O may have a way, we shall see. But I am on a Mac and so I don't know if the same methods of recording would work on a PC. Anyway, we shall see. All in all, a good day. - --Leslie Tired of spam? Yahoo! Leslie, People who aren't on the MB list probably have no idea what you're talking about. ;) This part was tagged onto the end of the random musings you posted to both lists. I just had to say something since you busted me a couple of weeks ago when I made reference to a comment on the wrong list. :P Barry, the s#*t disturber "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." - Ralph Waldo Emerson ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V9 #155 ***************************
