W." Subject: Off Topic: The Last Days.... Hello all, I hope everybody is OK. But first, I'm sorry to hear the death of the former US President, Ronald Reagan. How's the Basia talks these days? It seems that most of us is still waiting for Matt's Mood. For those who had got the new album, well, congratulations! I didn't write much in the last days and I have the reason for it. On Tuesday 1, my father was hospitalized because of his high blood pressure and a heart disorder. He had to stay in the hospital for 9 days. This was the second time for him to be hospitalized, the first time, he had to stay for about 3 full weeks, in 1998 - 1999. Yes, he had to spend New Year's Eve on the hospital bed at that time.... Everytime he has health problems, it always makes the entire family "suffer". No wonder because he is always close to the "expensive health problems" due to his workload besides from the heredity - he got his high blood pressure from his parents. Frankly, it can be avoided if he listened to the family's advices not to work too hard especially at his age, never eat junk food, and take day offs that the office gives him every year that he never takes. Even, the doctor said to him when he was hospitalized, "If you love your family, please take a rest for at least two weeks!" But I know that he will against doctor's advice because he is so "stubborn". Well, it seems that my family and I have to pray and try harder to make him "slow down" and enjoy his life. And me? Well, when he was hospitalized, I had to drive at 75 to 80 mph., at least four times a day, to and from the hospital, taking my mother or brother, along the winding, uphill and downhill free way, not mentioning the busy city streets if I had to go to the pharmacy, in that solar- powered 4WD Daihatsu Taft GT (or Rocky in the US). Solar- powered? Yes! Here in Indonesia, solar-powered vehicles had been extensively used since decades ago. Confused? Don't be! Because, in Indonesia, diesel fuel is called Solar... :-) Tired? Of course, because I have to concentrate not to hit the slower vehicles before me or going off-course and go down into the valley at that speed besides thinking of my father, and doing the daily jobs, including cooking, cleaning up the house, and staying up late night just in case there was a phone call about his condition. But now, we're happy because he had come home and around the family. He had to take a rest and it's not an easy job for the family to keep him at home and do the recovery process. If anyone of you have experiences like this, especially in making someone to take a rest to recover his/her health, while on the other hand, he/she insists to go to work, please share them to us so we can do better. OK, enough for now. When I have something about Basia to talk about, I'll share it with you all. Czesc, Desianto F. W. Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! Just do whatever it takes to get him to stop working so hard. Does he have any grandchildren? If he does, tell him that he needs to slow down so he'll be around longer for them. If he doesn't just tell him that you want him around as long as possible and tell him the world will keep spinning even if he doesn't work so hard. He has probably worked that hard for many years, and it will be hard for him to change. He is accustomed to working like that, it's just a part of who he is now. But if he wants to bad enough, he can change who he is, for the family as well as himself. I hope all goes well and that he sees how much it will mean to the ones he loves (and who love him) to make that difficult change. Got it!! (b, 18,50 at Brutus-Amsterdam) First impression My instant favorites are: La Luna (loved this tune from the first time i heard the sample) Wrong side of the street Slip & Sliding The album sounds more like a MB than Basia album to me. Wouldn't mind if the music was a little more daring and extremer. Most lyrics don't have that dept of Basia' s usual soulsearchers. But Basia's vocals are superb!!! And she added some new flavours to it! No news about releasing Ordinary Day as a cds in the Netherlands. Btw, what does copyright control means? I had no problems playing on in the CD-rom player, copying it to the computer and burn it on a cd. (It was listed as used, but really, how used can it be?) Got a note from the associated seller that it shipped today from Florida. Should be here in Buffalo in 3 or 4 days. On an off-topic note, I had the pleasure of driving an hour down the New York State Thruway to attend a Rochester International Jazz Festival concert yesterday evening. It was a reunion of the Rite of Strings tour with Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty and Al DiMeola. Three world-class artists and they were sounding great! But the highlight for me was the opening act - Eliane Elias. Some of you may know of her. She and her group played some marvelous samba and bossa nova for about an hour and a half. A delight both to the eyes and ears! Just want to suggest that if you like this style of music and ever have the chance to see her, don't pass it up. She alone would have been worth the price of the ticket, but with the other three artists performing, it was just icing on the cake. Another would be Joao Gilberto, ex-husband of Astrud Gilberto, who worked with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz in presenting "The Girl From Ipanema" and many other bossa nova songs to North American audiences. In fact, he is coming to San Francisco, June 25, as part of SF's spring/summer jazz festival, at the Masonic Auditorium. More information is at . It's on my calendar! My memory is foggy). Interesting to see how she has changed, from a very straight-ahead jazz pianist on her first few albums, then gradually working in more Brazilian sounds and moving towards a contemporary jazz sound, and most recently adding vocals, which have become more and more pronounced. I gotta figure the record companies see a potential Diana Krall type of success...great pianist, decent vocalist, and absolutely gorgeous. Too bad she has given up the serious jazz, but maybe she'll get back to it someday. By the way...18 hours after emailing me to say my shipment of Matt's Mood was delayed, I got an email from Amazon saying it has shipped! Very weird. Hoping it's here by the weekend so I can start wearing the disc out. Steve R. > > I agree Eliane, alone, IS worth the price of admission.
