Record companies usually sign artists with options for more than one album. The record company is not obligated to release a followup album, of course, unless an artist's attorney can negotiate a guarantee of release, but I'm not certain if MB or Basia are presently in a position to require such a clause in their recording contract. If the Matt Bianco album does well, I would speculate that it is likely that a release of a Basia solo album could be forthcoming. That's just my educated guess and is not to be taken as fact. This is all the more reason that people like us should do whatever we can to make the new MB release successful. I am also a member of Sarah Brightman's forum and a part of her success is enthusiastic unpaid promotion of her recordings and concerts. A strong showing of the new MB release in Europe will give the album, and Basia's career, a running start when the album, reportedly, is released in the U.S. in January. I like to think that those of us who have been loyal on this forum or managed to reach her by mail have provided encouragement and helped inspire Basia to record again. That would seem a much more logical explanation for her return to MB. I remember when the Bee Gees were having multi-year legal dispute under which they were not allowed to release anything as "The Bee Gees", but at the same time they were still quite busy writing and producing things for other people, like Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton's Islands in the Stream. Anyway, whether the legal theory is true or not, it's quite plausible. Not that Basia need a reason, but it makes me feel better if this is the case. Either way, though, any Basia is far better than NO Basia! I would love to hear more from those more connected to the legal side of things, but as a mere observer I have to wonder if it would depend upon if she *left* Sony, or if Sony *dropped* her (and don't look upon being dropped as necessarily a bad thing, piles of excellent artists have been dropped from their labels right and left in the past few years!). And also how valuable Sony thought her future commercial worth would be. My first thought is that they wouldn't consider a non-recording artist on their roster much of a loss, but I could be wrong. I've been about 100,000 times this year alone! ;-D It wouldn't suprise me though-- remember, that is why she and Danny recorded under 'Basia' in the first place, he had contractual stuff with WEA at the time (although my guess is that he bailed on a deal that he was signed to during the contract period).Basia apparently didn't, and had the cooler name. ;-P I remember when > the Bee Gees were > having multi-year legal dispute under which they > were not allowed to > release anything as "The Bee Gees", but at the same > time they were still > quite busy writing and producing things for other > people, See, their commercial value was huge back then. > case.
