["Desianto F. W." Subject: Off topic: Which one is the best for me? Dear all, I know maybe it's inappropriate to ask your opinion about my new career. However, since some of you have experiences in the field that I'm going to be in, I'd like you to give advices to me. Recently, I sent job proposals to two places. One is a regoinal TV station looking for some new reporters and cameramen, and the other is an FM radio station looking for a new male broadcaster. I chose to send my applications to these two companies because I believe that I can improve my skills besides I can introduce Basia to - at least the people of Semarang - more easily. However, I'm now in a dillema in deciding which one is the best for me. Today, April 15, 2004, the radio station called me for an appointment on the next Monday April 19. They said that they will test me but so far no news from the TV station. Of course it made me a little bit happier but at the same time I'm also worried. I tell you why. The regional TV station: It's a quite new TV station. They need some new reporters and cameramen, so I sent my application as a reporter. This TV station focuses mainly in crime news though there are also some cultural, entertainment, and science programs. It seems that they will sent the new men to the streets looking for crime news and some hot/recent topics, so the chance to play Basia's songs is lesser. However, it has an advantage because I can play Basia video (A New Day) that Thelma gave me and ask the crew to air it as the filler between programs though I'm still not sure about it considering the job description and their focus on crime news and local cultures. In addition, I can travel every- where, the one thing that I like. The working hours are also quite long so maybe I would get less free time. The FM radio station: It's a quite old radio station but not the biggest or the hottest in Semarang. It has various listeners but I get an impression that it focuses mainly on fashion world, the field that I don't really like...:-P, but I would focus mainly on music. The advantages: the station doesn't play junk music/ teenager's music so often - if it's not at all. They play 70's, 80's, and 90's music, children songs, religious program, some beauty tips, women's world program, Javanese music, and some other things that I can accept so I have an assumption that I wouldn't get difficulties in "sneaking in" some Basia stuff. The working hours, I think, are not so long, so I can get some free time. This one also allow me to work with computer, the other thing that I like. I don't get any info about the salary but the final amount, IMHO, is not so big different, considering that if I were in TV, I had to spend more money for transportation. So, which one is the best choice for career progression, skill improvement, and of course, spreading Basia fever? Thank you for your attention. Any advices or suggestions are welcomed. Desianto F. W. It depends on which skills you want to improve, and where you want your career to take you. If you want to focus on news reporting, the TV station would be the best choice. But if you would rather do entertainment stories, play music, and do lighter stuff, the radio station is best. From what you have told us, if you work at the TV station you will do a lot of news and crime stories, and there will only be a small chance of doing anything else. That will give you the skills to do news and crime stories, but really nothing else. Other employers would only see you as a news reporter. But if you work at the radio station, you will probably have more freedom to choose what you want to do. You can develop skills in interviewing people for entertainment stories, cultural stories, and news if you want that. Even if you start in a radio station, you could work for a TV station later doing the same thing if you found the opportunity. A TV (or radio) station will be more concerned with your ability to do your job well and do what they want. They will probably not care whether or not you have worked on a TV (or radio) station before. Where I live there are some of the TV and radio broadcasters who work in both areas at the same time. One local TV news reporter also does some news on a radio station. There is a person who is primarily a radio broadcaster, but he does some stores on a TV station too. A situation like that gives you the chance to do more of what you want too. You might be able to do news on one, and entertainment or music on another. From what you've said, it sounds to me like the radio station is the best choice for you right now. One thing to consider is that you haven't even heard from the TV station. You should at least go to the interview at the radio station, and if they offer you the job before you hear from the TV station you should take it. It's better to have one of the jobs than not to have either one. If the TV station calls before you are offered a job at the radio station, interview there too. Decide which one would make you the most happy, and which employer you like the mos. If the money is basically equal, you should definitely choose the one that would make you the most happy. If you don't have a real desire to be a news reporter and do the crime stories, you probably would not like that job at all. It is not a fun job if you don't really want to do it, and the longer hours make it that much worse. If the TV station does not call you, you won't have to worry about making a choice. Either place will give you some skills for the future, but like I already said it really depends on what you want to do with your career in the future. Hopefully this will help. Or you may decide I've just been babbling. Either way, let us know what you decide. Desianto - My advice to you is to look into a job selling advertising for the radio station. You get to meet a lot of interesting people and you can use your gift of gab to sell lots of advertising $$$$. I'm in radio sales in Boston, Massachusetts and love it. Not to mention, when Basia goes on tour, you can work out a slick radio promotion with the promoter and get lots of tickets for you and your clients. Good luck!
