Subject: Re: About "Astrud" Hi all, When Janelle talked about the life and works of Astrud Gilberto, I remember my experience about more than a year ago (in 2002, or the end of 2001 as long as I can remember), when I had not joined the list yet. At that time, after reading some books and newspapers, I was ready to go to bed. But I thought it was still too early (for me) though it was already 11:00 P.M. So, I turned on the TV, searched something good or interesting on it, but I didn't find it until I stumbled accross on one TV station airing a late night film/movie. The title was "GET YOURSELF A COLLEGE GIRL". One thing that made me interested is one line in its credit title at the opening scene. It is written: "Featuring: Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz" I was so surprised and I talked to myself. "Astrud? Is it the Astrud in Basia's song?" As a result, I opened my eyes longer to "eat" the movie till the end. The movie is quite old enough, about in 1960's. The story is about the lives of college students in a dormitory. One of them is a girl who loves to sing and performing plays. She is so talented but her teachers disagree about her decission to have a career in performing arts due to the law made by the major who dislikes performing arts. The major said that performing arts are often used by satan to "persuade' people to do something bad, therefore he made the law to stop performing arts and punish everybody doing it. But the girl, together with some of her friends insists to take her own way though she has to face the challenges. At this point, I thought Astrud Gilberto was casted to be the character of the girl. But I had a little doubt that she didn't look like Astrud, according to my imagination. So, I put aside my guess. OK, let's continue the story. When the winter holiday comes, the girls and her friends go to a winter resort to ski and - if they're lucky, they'll meet some boys. At the same time, there is a music performance at the resort, and by surprise, the major also comes to the resort to take a rest. I don't remember quite well about the acts in the winter resort scenes but I'm sure that there are some funny scenes about how the girl and her friends do some tricks to save their fates by make fun of the major, including to set up the major to see the performance and dance with a woman. Finally, the major turns his mind about performing arts and he will change the law when he comes back to town. So, when did Astrud Gilberto appear on the scene? She and Stan Getz were the music performers at the winter resort. She sang "The Girl from Ipanema". When I watched this, I said to myself, "So, this is Astrud. So, this is the woman that Basia made a "dedication" song to her." I never know if there are other movies with Astrud in them. But I think, it's quite brilliant to promote songs/albums by acting in a movie. At least, she had an experience in acting in a movie though - maybe - only once in her lifetime. Talking about acting, had Basia ever acted in a movie - except that "The Young Ones" serial in "Time", acted as a guitarist of Amazulu - or had her songs ever used in a movie? Well, so far, I haven't found it though I had opened my eyes quite wide when the credit titles of many movies appeared. Maybe some of you have a better luck than me, so please let us know. Have a nice snowy/rainy/dry/windy/busy/tiring/just ordinary day! Czesc, Desianto F. W. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Is it a complete performance, or partial? Does the camera focus on them, or are they just in the background? I'm curious since I don't think I have ever seen a film clip of Stan and Astrud doing that classic song. They probably performed on Ed Sullivan or something back in the 60's but I wasn't living in the states at that time anyway. Of course, I have a feeling that is going to be a hard movie to find on VHS or DVD anyway! She made appearances in all of the popular US television shows of the time, and had TV specials built around her in Europe, Japan and Africa. For many years she was the voice of Eastern Airlines, having recorded award-winning commercials. Are you saying Astrud and Stan > perform the song in the movie? Yes, Stan Getz and Astrud perfromed the song/some songs in the movie. Unfortunately, the only song that was fully and clearly recorded/filmed is "The Girl from Ipanema". As far as I can remember, they performed some other songs but I can tell you what songs because the scenes were changed to the girl, her friends, and the major. > Is it a complete performance, or partial? If you mean a complete performance means a complete band, yes, it is a complete band. I'm sure enough that the band is Stan Getz band. As far as I can remember, there were more than 5 or 6 persons but less than 10. There are a drummer, a percussion player, guitarist(s) (I'm not sure whether there is only one or two guitarists), a bassist with a stand up bass, a pianist, and some backing vocals. I remember the host of the winter resort made an announcement like this: "Ladies and gentelmen, please welcome a beautiful talented singer with a famous band, Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz!" - or something like that.... :-) > Does the camera focus on them, or are they just in the background? The camera did focus on them so it looked like a musical performance or a video clip instead of a movie. But as far as I can remember, the camera focused more on Astrud rather than the band. > I'm curious since I don't think I have ever seen a film clip of Stan > and Astrud doing that classic song. I myself was so surprised knowing about this and how lucky I was, given a chance to watch a classic movie with a classic singer and band. If only I had a VCR and a blank VHS tape, maybe I would record it and watch it over and over and over and over again. > Of course, I have a feeling that is going to be a hard movie to find > on VHS or DVD anyway! > > Steve I do have that feeling too because it is not aired anymore on the TV stations in Indonesia considering that there are many movies are played many times during this 3 years. Even there are some movies that had been aired more than 10 times in that period so I'm quite familiar with the story. However, I'm still hoping that someday, Astrud's movie would be played again though it is the least possible case, considering the taste of most Indonesians in movies.... Desianto F. There are also assorted sound tracks from the movie offered on various media. "The Hanged Man" is a bit more elusive. I do not see it listed in movie form at all, but there are numerous "soundtracks" offered - the problem is that there is very little information offered about the actual subject, and it appears that there are at least 2 other "Hanged Man" works within the category of porno (probably not the "Hanged Man" we are looking for, eh? Would someone volunteer to check them out for us and report back? LOL) Incidentally, there are 594 items listed for Basia on musicstack right now, but none of them are in any kind of video format. Bummer. /jan ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V9 #28 **************************
