Is the weather soooo cold around the world so everybody is busy heating his/her house/room? If yes, we also have heavy rainy days here in Indonesia, for about a month, not mentioning the cloudy and "light" rainy days. After all, January (or Januari in Indonesian) for Indonesians means "hujan sehari-hari", in English means "raining everyday" (hujan = rain, sehari-hari = everyday). And for February, well, I forget the exact term in Javanese but it means you can't get out of the house easily because of heavy rain everyday Nevermind! I believe all of you don't forget this list easily. OK, to raise the temperature on the list, I try to write something. Several days ago, I listened to Time and Tide and when "Astrud" came into my ears, something crossed my mind about how many Astrud's songs in this song. So far, I've collected 5 song titles in the lyrics of "Astrud". They are: 1. A Certain Smile 2. So Nice 3. Good Bye Sadness 4. One Note Samba 5. Fly Me to the Moon Are there still some song titles in "Astrud" that I haven't mentioned before? I don't know much about Astrud Gilberto's songs or albums so I think there are still some left. If this topic had been discussed on the list when the list is soooooo young - a looooong time ago, well, maybe I have to read the archive one more time. It also makes me wonder whether or not other singers/songwriters also made songs including some song tiltles in the lyrics. As far as I know, I never heard other singers/songwriters did that - except a stand-up comedian that I watched on TV long ago - and, of course, Basia. Czesc, Desianto F. The line "Tall and tanned, young and lovely girl" is a reference to "The Girl From Impanema". I checked the list archives, and that's about all we found the last time this came up (1996, anyone!) People thought the line "a lonely heart is nothing new" was a reference, but no one every found it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2004 19:58:48 -0800 (PST) From: "Desianto F. W." Subject: Re: Off topic: Woobie Doobie Hello Dennis (or shall I call Mr. Majewicz?) and all, I've searched everywhere about Woobie Doobie but I got not much info. I tried to translate the contents using online dictionary but, IMHO, it didn't work well because only about 50% are translated and the rest is still in Polish. I also found a link to their history in English but it seems that it doesn't work or still under construction. The only info that I got is that, they were started in Summer of 1992 and people say that their music can be categorized in Funk/Smooth Jazz. The personnel are five young men (they were born in late 70's) and the instruments used are drum, electric guitar, saxophone, keyboard, and electric bass. They have their own studio called Woobie Doobie studio, formerly known as Studio 59, and they have performed in many Jazz festivals, mainly in Poland. Sorry for not contributing much. I hope it can "add" something. Desianto F. W. ======================================================= - --- "Dennis J. I love it! Thinking of "Astrud" inspired me to look for Ms. Gilberto's "official website" which you can find here: http://www.astrudgilberto.com/ and learn more about her - she is a remarkable woman! On the index page, for example, she makes it very clear that she cherishes animals (cats in particular) and children; she issued a statement joining PETA, Paul McCartney and others in expressing revolt against KFC's inhumane treatment of chickens. There is a wealth of information on her website about the evils of mankind toward animals. It takes fortitude to even do the research she has done, if one loves animals. There is also an informal interview, where she was asked questions by her friends, and she revealed some of her musical influences and favorite music. She listed: Joao Gilberto, Chet Baker, Jobim, Gil Evans, Bill Evans, Djavan, Pat Metheny, Donald Fagan, Ivan Lins, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitsgerald, Frank Sinatra, Michael Franks, Edmundo Gismonti, Chicago, Kenny Rankin, Santana,Yes, Steely Dan,Yellow Jackets, the vocal groups Boca Livre and The New York Voices, Quincy Jones, Don Sebesky, Deodato, Eliane Elias, Ray Charles, Carole King, Burt Bacharach, and Sting, Rachmaninov and Debussy (in "no intentional order"). There is an "AG" store at her website where one can purchase many things including her art and her music (including her 2002 CD, "Jungle".) On the biography page of her website ( http://www.astrudgilberto.com/biography.htm ) there is a reference to Basia and the song "Astrud". Interesting, eh? I thought so anyway. /jan ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V9 #27 **************************
