One of the local radio stations has been playing nothing but Christmas music since before Thanksgiving, and they will be playing it (I think) until the first of the year. So I've been listening to a lot of different artists and renditions of all the best. I was going to post on the subject anyway. I am not a fan of Madonna, but her version of "Santa Baby" is good. She has the voice to do it right. Then yesterday I heard a song and I was ready to turn the station off forever. Celine Dion, quite possibly the world's worst singer, has recorded a version of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas". There are some songs you just don't touch, and that is one of them. I don't know if I would've liked anyone else doing it, the fact that it was her was that much worse. I like most Christmas music, way too much to list. Most of what I've heard this year has been good; Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 13:25:06 -0500 From: pages@paxety.com Subject: Re: Xmas listening Right this second, I'm listening to a Keeley Smith album, which, unfortunately has only one line by Louis Prima - he does the Santa line in Rudolph. It would be a hoot if they had done Christmas songs over a Prima shuffle. I too enjoy Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas. While we obviously associate it with the TV show, it's some pretty excellent music. The Carpenter's Christmas Portrait is a staple, as are any of the Narada new age Christmas CD's. They are all very peaceful and tastefully done. Here's three to consider. Kenny Loggins' December (1998), is a pleasant one. It's as much a seasonal CD as a Christmas one. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve and Other Stories (1996) has some really cool music on it. Some might be offended by the hard rock guitars, but mostly it works, and I give them high marks for creativity. Finally, I picked up a CD called Snowbound (1999), by Foreplay. What a terrific CD! This is where the smooth jazz genre should have headed. It has enough structure of the basic song to be recognizable, yet the arrangements and solos "jazz it up". If you want to listen to music that is intelligent, and really challenges you to listen actively, you'll do no better than to get this one. Nathan East is a terrific bass player, and Bob James is a top-notch jazz pianist and arranger. BTW, did I happen to mention the guitarist of this band? Once again, Larry Carlton, the best damn guitarist ever to play on Wal-Mart's Muzak, is THE MAN. He STILL hasn't done a bad solo. He hasn't done a mediocre one. They are all EXCELLENT! I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! I just got a cd (not new, but "new" to me!) of Bernard Oattes - called "Rules of My Heart". It has Peter White on several of the cuts, and I am just listening to it over and over and soaking the whole thing up. Yeh, I know it's not a Merry Hollydaze cd, but I'be gotta get my mind around it before I can go back to Christmas. Incidentally, I caught TV's impression of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" the other night. Snigger. I'm not even attempting intellectual pursuits at present, can you tell? Happy, happy, joy, joy to all. And once you've enjoyed the Fourplay Christmas CD, you MUST check out Larry's own Christmas album, "Christmas at Our House." Every time I loan this disc to someone, they run out and buy their own copy. It's really wonderful. If you mean Christmas songs only, then "I was born on Christmas Day" obviously, but they did loads of slightly leftfield covers of old Christmas songs from the 1960s onwards, e.g. a bare but heartfelt acoustic cover of "Driving home for Christmas". Most recently they did a special Christmas CD, including a track "Snow", written by Randy Newman for Claudine Longet. They kindly handed this CD out to anyone who went to their gigs, and it is already trading for slightly appalling sums on Ebay. But you shouldn't ask a Brit; we're a bit weird about Christmas songs. There's a special place in my heart for Freiheit, the Flying Pickets and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. A sky-scraping dove, yeah. In any other country, Slade would have been interned. Other than Saint Etienne; the Spector Christmas album, plus loads of choral stuff from Kings Cambridge. And Mariah (All I want for Christmas). george - -- George Davson, Computer Services, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK gdavson@brookes.ac.uk Tel: +44 1865 483317 Fax: +44 1865 483073 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 23:00:29 -0600 From: Max Wellhouse Subject: Re: Off-Topic Some years ago, I found a double CD set of both Carpenters' Christmas albums and although they've been discussed here at length lately, I've yet to find a better Christmas collage of music, both traditional and contemporary(at least up to the 70's). Richard Carpenter was at his best during those productions. Karen ain't bad either.
