I confess right up front that I loved the momentary departure from her usual intellectual fare from the second I heard it; I find it eminently danceable (what working musician can seriously condemn that attribute?) and the lyrics refreshingly straight-forward and accessible, surely, to even the least literate of Basia's fans. So I ask you tried-and-true diehard listpersons: Why was it so cool to hurl sophomoric insults at the tune? I read "terrible", "awful", and even, I believe, "waka-waka-waka" (colorful but rather nonspecific, eh? ~ actually a plagiarism from Fozzy Bear of the Muppet Show, I think) - long rants of holy criticism. "That riff really is terrible" railed one guy. "Well, at least it's obvious why it was left off the US release!" someone sniggered (oh, because the U.S. is SO known for its refinement and highbrow taste - particularly in music? Come now, I protest.) I double-checked the url to be sure I had not stumbled onto another webpage; these were, indeed, posts from purported Basia devotees/jazz aficionados; OUR list (or rather THEIR list, at the time. I was elsewhere.) Critic #1: "Someone should have smuggled a big electromagnet into the studio the day they recorded 'Give Me That.'" Critic #2: "Actually, in the middle. [sic] but, [sic] yeah, that sucks too." So I ask you: Was everyone smoking crack around that time? am I simply tone-deaf, dumb, blind and stupid? (That is entirely possible, I suppose, but my music professors never gave any indication of that in their critiques, even tho they disapproved of me and were not generous with the love.) Then again, these same Critics also wrote (and I directly quoth via cut-n-paste): "Time and Tide had a lot of very solid, catchy tunes, but strange lyrics". What strange lyrics? (Should that be my clue as to where these folks were operating from?) I give up: what was going on back then, and why was it so popular to punk GMT? Any divine enlightenment will be appreciated! Hope everyone's doing fabulously. Just wait until you get to the point where 'Clear Horizon' came out! IMHO, it's cute but hardly Basia's shining moment on disc. - --Leslie the old fogey __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! I agree that criticism is always a very human activity except in those who are permanently asleep at the wheel; but if I were Basia reading those little snippets of snottiness, I might just decide to go on vacation for 20 or so years myself! LOL! I guess when we are beseeching Lady B to record again, we will need to remind her to adhere to our personal favorites and not deviate. We enjoyed annoying each other, and we could only hope it annoyed Basia all the more. After all annoying can include tickling, but, tickling can be stimulating (rite?), and we wanted her to be extremely stimulated. I think the concensus of this list is Basia has never read anything here, and that is the biggest annoyance. However we continue to stimulate each other with our annoying posts. Get it?
