What a voice - I miss her still. The general public probably never considers how truly brilliant Richard's arrangements remain even today...what an evocative, expressive gift... Hal Blaine has played drums on over 3000 recordings and I believe years ago we was on Larry King's radio show(might've been Jim Bohannon) and was hawking a book he'd written. He had mentioned that he also did the studio drum work for the Beachboys. he said Brian Wilson was an excellent drummer on stage, but didn't have the skills for studio work. Don't think that was the case with the Carpenters, but Richard may have had the funding to go out and get the best back up musicians possible and Hal Blaine would fit in that category. I doubt his sister was too offended. She had an incredible voice, an incredible brother to produce her sound. If you've never heard her sing "Masquerade" through a pair of Klipschorns in a good room, you have missed out. Yeah, I was a closet Carpenter's Fan back then and still am.
